Please do not reattach as the mother of John Coggin. There is exactly one record of Francis Bland, which states she died without having any children.

Biography

John Cogan was first married to Joyce (as shown below in the research notes). It would appear that after Joyce died, John married Francis Bland, sister-in-law (and cousin) of Edward Bland, who had moved to Charles City County, from London. A book on the Bland family published in 1826 states that, Francis Bland, daughter of Gregory Bland of London, married "at nearly 50 years old" John Coggan of Charles City County, VA, and that she died without issue in 1677 and was buried at Westover[1]. Franics was not the mother of John Cogan's children, nor was she the wife of Richard Tye or Cheney Boyce.

1. Joyce married Cheney BOYCE
2. about 1644 the widowed Joyce married Captain Richard TYE. They had several children, including two daughters; Elizabeth TYE born about 1650, and Frances TYE
3. after Richard Tye's death, Joyce married Dr. John COGGIN and they had at least one daughter, Rebecca COGGIN.

Research Notes

Charles City County Records Naming Joyce, not Francis, as the person who married Cheney Boyce, Richard Tye, and John Cogan

  • Richard Tye married Joyce, the widow of Cheney Boyce about 1644. According to the Jamestown Society, he was deceased by 1649 when Joyce was described as his widow[2]. However, that assertion is in error as on September 5, 1655 "Upon the choice and request of Thos Boyce, orphan of Mr Cheney Boyce dec'd, ordered that Ca: Richd Tye be guardian of him and his estate during his minority, the court doth order and appoint that the sd Capt Tye do keep educate and maintain the said Boyce, being allowed therefore out of his estate and endeavor and the preservacon of the said orphans estate and give a yearly account thereof.[3]"
  • October 3, 1658, Mrs. Joyce Tye was granted administration of the estate of Captain Richard Tye, dec'd, whose last will was presented to the court[4]. On the following page is an order for the appraisal of Richard's estate, that gives a date of December 13[5].
  • June 4, 1659 "John Cogan who married the relict and ex. of Capt Richd Tye dec'd" was ordered by the court to pay money to Thomas Drewe[6]. On September 20th, 1663 John Cogan presented to the court the items belonging to Captain Richard Tye, which he had sold to Robert Wynn for "surety of the estate and free educacon of the orphans of Capt. Richd. Tye, dec'd."[7].
  • July 29 1660 John Cogan says that he has made full satisfaction with Thomas Boyse and asks for discharge from his duties. Thomas Boyse says acknowledged he had all of his estate and portion from Captain Richd Tye dec'd[8].

Looking for a profile for Frances, daughter of Gregory Bland (1567-1627), who married John Coggan (according to Gregory's profile), I found this profile. I also found the profile for John Coggan attached as father of her daughter Rebecca, but his profile appears to be conflated with the Massachusetts John - see John (Coggin) Coggan (abt.1621-). At one point, Coggin-1 had been attached as husband to this Frances, with his birth/death as Bristol, Gloucestershire (1617) and "Charles City, Prince George," Virginia (Charles City and Prince George are both counties) in 1698.

Source cited on this profile for "Joyce Bland" does not mention a marriage with Boyce or Tye - or children by them - and has her birth in 1603 to Gregory & his unknown wife, as shown below, but also has alternative dates of born 1618 and died 1661 (in "Charles City, Charles").[9] [Cheney Boyce bio shows he married Joyce around 1635. See Jamestowne reference below.]

Joyce married Cheney Boyce about 1635. [10]

Joyce Bland, daughter of Gregory Bland, was born 1603 and died 1677 in Charles City, VA. She married John Coggin, son of John Cogan and Mary Jourdian. Their daughter, Rebecca Wynn Coggan, was born in 1645 in Charles City and died in Surry, VA in 1674.
From the profile for Gregory Bland (1567-1627)
  1. Frances Bland (1603-1677) married John Coggan[11]
  2. Jane Bland (1605-1664) Married (a) Edward Bland, her cousin (1613-1652) and (b) John Holmwood[11]
  3. Peter Bland (1614-?) nothing is known about Peter[11]
  • Gregory Bland, merchant-tailor. Pd. £25. Son of Adam Bland, and brother to John Bland. His daughter Jane married her first cousin, Edward Bland, and emigrated to Virginia.[12]
Notes about Frances Bland of Virginia (abt.1620-1677)
  • From comment: The book, A Vision of Unity..., does not discuss any children.
  • Only the Coggan marriage is mentioned in the profile of Gregory Bland-1668.
  • A second profile for Gregory - Gregory Bland (abt.1595-) - has him a generation later (which fits better with a daughter born a generation later). But the profile for Gregory (born 1567) did not mention a son Gregory.
  • Maybe Gregory Bland's granddaughter by Jane & Edward Bland?
  • Who is Joyce Bland?

Children and husbands attached to Rebecca (bef.1650-aft.1694):

Coggin-1

Looking at changes, it may be more than just the Virginia husband of Frances & a Massachusetts Coggan that were conflated - among the changes is one where the birth date is changed with the following explanation: "changed birth date to help with needed merge - "before 1630" is too late for the birth of his daughter Rebecca"
One merge appears to have been with a profile intended as the son of John and Frances (Bland) Coggan.
One change "lost" marriage data: to Joyce Bland-191 on 1659-06-03 in Charles City.
Mass merges of wives appears to have merged a Joyce (Unknown) with Frances Bland-155, and lost that Frances had married John in 1640 & John had died after 1659 (perhaps based on the previously lost marriage date?). The same detailed change page showed the new death year of about 1698 and his birth location changed from Charles City to "Bristol, Gloucestershire, England" (the New England John has birth in 1621 but source [Anderson] does not give a location).
The profile for his son has birth about 1645 - perhaps he died in 1698?

I have removed Francis Bland as the wife of Cheney Boyce and Richard Tye. I have also removed all children from her profile, as the source there is for a marriage between John Cogan and Francis Bland, also states that she was 50 years old when she married him and that she died "without issue". I have added transcriptions of court records to the relevant profiles that show Joyce was the wife of Boyce, Tye, and Cogan.

Either John Cogan had a first wife named Francis, or the name Francis is in error. All records in Charles City County show that the wife of Cheney Boyce, Richard Tye, and John Cogan was Joyce. I have added several of those records to Richard Tye and John Cogan's profiles. I have not read the book "A Vision of Unity" but I am assuming there is no source given for a marriage between Francis Bland and John Cogan, since only the book itself is cited here. It seems her first name should be changed to Joyce or Francis needs to be detached from Tye and Boyse and a profile for Joyce should be added.

According to "A Vision of Unity: The Bland Family in England and America 1555-1900; by Charles L. Bland; 1990, ISBN 0-96108-4-0-X"

Gregory Bland had a daughter Frances (1603-1677) who married John Coggan. He does not mention these other husbands (nor does the book discuss any children.)

Gregory also had other children Jane Bland (1605-1664) and Peter Bland (1614-?).

The birth date of "1603" mentioned in the book referenced above, is significantly different than the 1620 birthdate shown here.

If this is the same person -then we should merge Bland-156 with "Bland-1668"
