Research Notes

DNA Haplogroup

Important DNA correlations - descendants of Jonathan and brother Elisha Blevins-3693 have tested on Family Tree's Blevins YDNA Project (Subgroup A). Their Haplogroup is documented as E - M35.

Others sharing this same Haplogroup from this project include descendants of James Blevins-245 and William Blevins-255, of progenitor James Blevin-33

Birthdate/ Marriage Place

Jonathan was likely born before 1763, the birth of son Jonathan was in 1779, and Jonathan was documented on the building of the Burke Roads circa 1788. He is reported to be on the updated 1783 Montgomery County Militia roster for Cox's Company.

He married Charlotte Muse-114 circa 1779, in Montgomery County, VA. "Lottie" in turn was likely born near Montgomery County as her brother Richard Muse-434 appears on the Montgomery Militia Roster.

Jonathan was likely born before 1763, the birth of son Jonathan Blevins-432 was in 1779.

Jonathan does not appear documented in North Carolina "Washington County Court Pleas" until 1788, building the Burke (Buncombe) Roads. (Buncombe was not formed until 1792).

Timetable/ Migration

Jonathan was involved in the Loyalist Insurrection of 1779, and is named with father Daniel and brother Richard. "Blevins Men of the Revolution", page 6.

He appears on the 1782 Montgomery County Militia (updated list), under James McDaniel with brother Richard Blevins-113.

Jonathan appears on the 1783 Montgomery Militia lists, under Enoch Osborne, so does brother Richard Blevins-113. A second updated list includes Jonathon and brother Richard under John Cox. (these Militia records, "Blevins Men of the Revolution").

Jonathan was involved in the building of the (Buncombe) Burke Roads in 1788, with father Daniel and brothers John, Elisha, and Richard. (Washington County Court Pleas)

Jonathan's 1790 Burke N.C. Census, notes only 3 females, his wife and documented daughters' Polly Blevins-3694 Thomas and Lucretia Blevins-496 Cooper.

Polly Blevins-3694 Thomas is documented as the daughter of Jonathan, by given consent in her marriage to Alexander Thomas on 9 Dec 1807.

Primitive Baptist notes

Some Blevins family members were involved in the Primitive Baptist Movement.

Jonathan known as an Elder, and in July 1810 was present at the founding of the Bethel Baptist Church on the Little South Fork. His brothers' John Blevins-1962 a member, Elisha Blevins-3693 (also an Elder) founded the Primitive Baptist Church in Sweetens Cove, Marion, TN.

It is noted in these transcriptions that both Jonathan and John were avid "swearers", and often warned. John was excluded from the fellowship in 1814 for "for refusing to hear or set with the church". Jonathan was excluded from the fellowship in Jan 1817 "for profane swearing and other ill language"

Jonathan is speculated to have died in Scott, Tennessee on 21 Mar 1830. He is last documented in Wayne County, Kentucky in 1830.

Washington County Court Pleas

2nd Monday of July, 1789, "Ordered by the Court that a road be laid off the nearest and best way from Greasy Cove to the head of Limestone Cove on the road leading to Burke, and the following persons be appointed a Jury to view and lay off" Jonathan Blevins, father Daniel, brothers Elisha, John and Richard.

Jonathan is documented in "The Blevins Men of the Revolution" and in "Washington County Court Pleas".

Blevins Men of the Revolution

Jonathan was named in a sworn deposition by Capt. John Cox, entered by William Campbell 16 Jul 1779 by the Washington County Court Records for taking part in the Insurrection of Captain's Cox and Osbourne's Companies for Loyalist activities.

"Died about 21 Mar 1830 at about age 47 in Station Camp, Sumner, Tennessee, United States" is highly suspicious. Census day was June 1st that year and there were no Blevins in Sumner that year, A search of the marriage and will records in the Sumner County TNGenWeb Project Website also draws blanks. Personally, I have no idea where where he died, I lost track of him in or near Jackson County, Alabama with his brothers John and Elisha in 1819. The Jonathan Blevins in Wayne County in 1830 is the younger Jonathan in Wayne County in 1810.

Also, in none of the source documents, including the 1810 Wayne County, Kentucky census, is he called Senior, by any spelling, Nor is the younger Jonathan in the 1810 Wayne County census called Junior, by any spelling, in any document I've ever seen. Maybe they were father and son, but to claim that without proof is mere speculation. I use the caveat "presumed son" because, in fact, the younger Jonathan could be the son of any of the four men men who were in the of 45 and older category (Richard, John, Talton [sic, Tarlton] and Jonathan.) To make matters worse, he could also be the son of one of their other brothers, or even a cousin.

Going a bit farther, the only two proven children in the above "Father of" listing are Polly Thomas and Elizabeth Steele,

Finally, as I've posted before the only proven wife of Daniel Blevins Jr is a Miss Sutton. Thus the acknowledgment "Sarah Blevins is the mother of Long Hunter Jonathan "The Elder" Blevins" has no basis in fact.

I'm now stepping off my soapbox.

I have several other comments concerning Jonathan

"Born 21 Mar 1783 in Charlotte County, Virginia, British Colonial America?" is obviously wrong.

His age category in the 1810 Wayne census is 45 & Over, thus he was born in or before 1765. Considering that his presumed son Jonathan was born in or about 1779 makes it's likely that he was born about 1759.

Charlotte County? No way. "What's now Grayson County, Virginia" seems a safe bet.

Jonathan's 1790 census record also includes a boy in the Under age 16 category.

Great job again, Sherlock Alton Blevins! Honestly, this kind of sleuthing is so appreciated (not to mention needed.)

Dump the "Long Hunter" tag.

Jonathan son of Daniel Jr can be said to have been born in or before 1767 based on the 1788 Taxpayers for Washington County, Tennessee -- Jonathan Blevins, John Blevins, Richard Blevins not made returns -- they had to have been at least twenty-one to be responsible for their own taxes. His age can be refined based on the 1810 census of Wayne County, Kentucky. He is the Jonathan on page 362. His age category was 45 & over, thus he was born in or before 1765.

OK. Well, cryminy a river, Alton. You certainly make a great case, but I'm not sure why to drop the "Long Hunter" nickname. Is there another one who already has it?

I'm trying to remember my source for this profile, & unable to remember it right now. But the birthplace & date are so specific, it must've been either a family history on my Grandpa Quinn's side, from a Bible or sumthin' like that, or else could be the incorrect (so I'm told) genealogy given to me by a 3rd cousin many years ago. Which is probable. Is this profile a candidate to be merged with another? (See below what Ange wrote a year ago.) Also, all the other previous comments, along with a merge with Blevins-1582 already done some years ago. I almost remember that one. Also merged with Blevins-635. And there was some "controversy" doing those before it was settled. It just goes to show, these Blevins profiles, especially 18th century ones, and especially the numerous Daniels, continue to be a puzzle to more people than me. I'll refer this to Ange & Andrea. Thank you for your attention to detail once again, Alton!

I know it's traditional to say that he was a long hunter, but, to my knowledge, there's absolutely zero evidence that he was -- Robert Paul Blevins presented a greatly expanded treatment on the long hunters for in his revised edition of The Blevins Men of the Holston and never once typed the word Jonathan. Statements without facts often have a life of their own.

"Statements without facts often have a life of their own." Well said, Alton, & too true of too many things. Seems so especially these days, but at least we have people like you to get/keep the record(s) straight on WikiTree. Thank you!

Jonathan's likely father has to be Daniel, there seems to be enough proof. As of now, I see no alternative. Jonathan and Richard have to be the likely sons of Daniel, supported by residency, Insurrection charge, and the following migratory path into Buncombe with father Daniel. It's a wrap?

Jonathan is documented in "Washington County Court Pleas" with brothers Elisha Blevins-3613, Richard Blevins-113.

Jonathan is documented in "Blevins Men of the Holston; Theoretical Structures of the first Blevins Families of Tennessee" page 94, Robert P. Blevins. Father is indicated as Daniel Blevins-3506, these group of Blevins are Tories from Montgomery, VA. who make migrate the same path.

additional info; "The New River Notes" contributor Ron Blevins had previous research (2011) on Daniel sons' and Tory affiliations. "New River Notes" is now the Grayson County Heritage Foundation.

Thanks.

Jonathan Blevins tree needs work. Some of these children when I researched, seem to be non existent persons. I believe this tree was originally based on "The Longhunter Blevins" work by Leslie Blevins.

So has anyone noticed that the birthdate for Jonathan "Junior" is given as c. 1779 while the marriage date for Jonathan #1 and Charlotte Muse is given as 1783 and that, if Jonathan #1 were the father of Jonathan Junionr/"Jont", the elder would have fathered the younger at approximately age 16?
posted by Gregory Ned Blevins
Buncombe County, NC did not exist until 1791. So either the marriage date or the marriage place for Jonathan and Charlotte is incorrect.
I think it is a reference to Henry County VA. Note; with reference to Jonathan b. ca 1763, at the time it would have been Pittsylvania County, because Henry County was not created until 1777.

Is "Henry, Virginia" a reference to Henry County, or is it a local place name?

Richard and Jonathan are likely brothers, but they are not brothers of the William, John, Dillon and James listed here.
