Biography

Flag of Northamptonshire (adopted 2014)
John Bliss was born in Northamptonshire, England.

Nicholas William John "1562 John Blisse baptized the second of februarye"

The American Bliss families can trace their roots mainly to two counties in England, Northamptonshire and Gloucestershire. Contrary to the information erroneously reported by many, the Bliss lines are NOT from Belstone, Devonshire. Belstone, Devonshire was never the home of Thomas Bliss or any other Bliss. Genealogies based on Blisses from Belstone are incorrect.

The (George Bliss) Newport and (Thomas Bliss) Rehoboth lines link back to their father, John Blisse of Daventry, and later, Preston Capes and Preston Parva. This identification was questioned by R.C. Anderson in the Great Migration Directory in 2015. Please see discussion in g2g: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1652422/should-parents-thomas-rehoboth-george-newport-disconnected

The son of William and Elizabeth BLISS, John was baptised at Daventry on 2 Feb 1562. He became a blacksmith and moved to the parish of Preston Capes. John married and had at least eight children, although record of the marriage, his wife's name and the baptisms have not been found. See Research Notes

After the death of his first wife, John married Alice Smith at Preston Capes on 1 Apr 1614.[1]

John was buried in the churchyard on 8 Sep 1617.

Research Notes

John's first wife was presumed by some to be Agnes (Old) Bliss (abt.1562-) who married a John Blisse on 27 Jan 1587/8 in Stowe Nine Churches, Northamptonshire, England.[4] Further records at Stowe Nine Churches show ten baptisms for children to John and Agnes/Anne and a burial for John husband of Agnes 13 Feb 1631/2, suggesting that this marriage record refers to a different John Bliss.

I've created profiles for John Blisse (abt.1563-bef.1632) of Stowe Nine Churches and his children. With the many baptisms in Stowe Nine Churches for John and Agnes (Ann), and the burial record for John husband of Agnes, that Agnes Old should be moved over to that family and removed from this one.

It might be helpful to replace Agnes with a place holder ( Unknown (Unknown) Blisse) as the mother of John's children.

Since I haven't heard any objections, I will go ahead and change the connections.

Can Bliss-4727 (Agnes (Bliss) Harding) and Harding-981 (Agnes Harding) be merged? Harding-981 parents are Bliss. I believe Bliss-4727 and Harding-981 are the same person, but got separated either when entered, or merged. John and Alice (Smith) Bliss are my 11x GGPs. I descend from Thomas and Margaret (Hulings) Bliss. Thank you! Carol (Baldwin-3428)
