Biography

Middlesex (historic flag)
Emma (Unknown) Mayo was born in Middlesex, England.

Origins

Nothing is presently known about the origins of Em, believed to have had three husbands, other than that she is most likely born in England. An estimated year of birth is say 1645 based upon her first marriage.

First Marriage

Em first married John Pike, a merchant tailor in the City of London. It may be read that both the record of John's birth and his marriage to Em are believed destroyed by the great fire of London in 1666. Some place the marriage estimate as 1667 which does beg the question how was the record lost in a 1666 fire. Their first known child was born 1668.

With John Pike, Em had nine children, two of which survived to adulthood, Africa and Samuel whose baptismal records are extant (thought lost for many years). John Pike died 1 Oct 1681.

Second Marriage

Em's second marriage was to a John Nixon. It has been speculated that the 1 Jan 1683 marriage of a John Nickson [sic] and Emm Pike [sic] at Temple Church, London is their marriage record however this has not been proven.[9] In WikiTree, this husband is probably this John Nixon however extant records are so scant it is not certain the records we do have are for the same person.

A lawsuit in Chancery Court of Pasqutank, Oct/Nov Session 1706,[citation needed] which was against Samuel Pike concerning land he had inherited from his father in law [term for stepfather in this time period], John Nixon, effectively proves that Emma Pike had remarried.

To the Colonies

There is no record of when Em and John Nixon came to the colonies, however, we have clues. Their headrights (along with those of others) were proved by Edward Mayo in 1693/94 while the earliest property records of Edward in the colony are dated 1684. "On the first Monday, 1693/94 Edward Mayo proved thirteen headrights for the taking up of land: Eward Mayo, Sr., Edward Mayo, Jr., Sarah Mayo, Ann Mayo, Elizabeth Mayo, John Nixon, Em Nixon, Samuel Pike, Affrica Pike and three slaves, in all thirteen."[10] Headrights were often proved and paid many years after the fact. In this case, we know Edward Mayo had been in the colony by at least 1684 and it is reasonable to suggest that Em and John Nixon were here by then as well (and possibly arrived with Edward Mayo though there is no documentation of this). The relationship between John and Em Nixon and Edward Mayo prior to the colony is unknown at this time. Edward had been in Barbados prior to the colony.

The earliest reference in colonial records to a John Nixon is 6 Nov 1679 at which time he was a member of the "Grand Councell for ye County of Albemarle" and declared his age to be fifty-four.[11] Winslow found no other references in this period to a man of this name suggesting he may be the John Nixon for which Edward Mayo senior received headrights.

The death date of John Nixon is nowhere recorded. Em had no known children with John Nixon. An Ann Nixon did migrate with them to America, but it's likely she was John Nixon's child by an earlier marriage in England. Her age is unknown.

Third Marriage

Em's third marriage was to Edward Mayo. The only extant records documenting that they were married are estate records from July 1701 where Edward is contesting what happens to a particular slave[12] and administration papers giving her as "Em Mayo, wife of Edward Mayo, dec'd." (See citation under Death)

Death

The death of Em Mayo is nowhere recorded but is before July 1701. Africa Pike and husband Hugh McGregory were administrators of "Emy Mayo, wife of Edward Mayo, dec'd."[13]. Estate papers regarding Edward's challenge to elements of the estate settlement are dated July 1701.[12][14] There is no known record of Edward Mayo after the July 1701 court records.

Research Notes

  • Many have attempted to give Em the surname McGregory or McGregor which is possibly a confusion surrounding the administration of her estate. It has never been proven to be the case that Em was ever a McGregory or McGregor and there appears to be nothing of substance to suggest this.
  • She also appears with the maiden name Blount though this is discredited.
  • While she may be seen in some internet genealogy as "Emily", this given name appears nowhere in records of the period.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Emma by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Emma:

If England and USSC agree, I would like to re-arrange this profile, do some basic clean-up, and interpose some probabilities. Among these, the earliest land records in Carolina for Edward Mayo are 1684. The headrights of 1693/94 which somewhere on this profile are used to suggest she arrived there 'as early as' 1693/94 would be a misinterpretation. While it is possible Edward rec'd headrights for different transport at different times, I think this suggests she is in Carolina at least by the time we see the first property records of Edward 1684. While I don't believe it is yet proven that the 1683 London marriage of Em Pike and John Nickson are these people, that time frame could work with departure to the colony not long after marriage.

T, thank you for the offer. Please do you what you suggest with the clean-up.

Done with some additional citations to be added. I suggest that the Middlesex sticker be removed since there is no documentation of her date or place of birth. Agreed?

The earliest reference in colonial records to a John Nixon is 6 Nov 1679 at which time he was a member of the "Grand Councell for ye County of Albemarle" and declared his age to be fifty-four (giving a birth year of 1625), (Winslow, Ellen Goode, A History of Perquimans County, Edwards and Broughton, Raleigh, 1931, p 6 citing Colonial Records I:355.) Winslow found no other references in this period to a man of this name suggesting he may be the John Nixon for which Edward Mayo senior received headrights (which are often granted years later). Does this bring into question the 1683 marriage between a John Nickson and Em Pike in London given on the profile? It is possible he traveled back and forth.

Examining the various extant probate records concerning the estate of Em, deceased, wife of Edward Mayo, it appears to me these are dated July 1701. Perhaps her date of death should read by July 1701?

Most of the Quaker Nixon family found in the Albemarle/Pasquotank is recorded in some manner. Has it been determined if the John Nixon probable wife of Em is already in WikiTree?

Jo, I have made the date correction with citation. I have also created https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Nixon-7958 as probable second husband. I am uncertain if the two early references to John Nixon are the same man but there is nothing that indicates two men of the same name in the very small population found in the Albemarle/Perquimans at the time. I will leave it to England Project to go ahead and connect Nixon-7958 as husband if you think it prudent. I think the marriage in London 1683 should be further scrutinized...the names match with phonetic spelling. I'm going to post a G2G asking for additional research help on this John Nixon from England and US Southern Colonies.

RJ Horace set up a task list (see comment in this G2G Query) on the proposed merge profile query. . .

Beyond that is whether her parents and LNAB are proven. So if the merge is imminent, choose Unknown, for now, and list the attached parents as disputed origins (unless they have been proven).

I can add the Ancestry Record links when I am not on mobile.

Unknown-221861 and Blount-672 appear to represent the same person because: This has been sitting for over 3 months as an unmerged match. Please review and determine if the LNAB should be Unknown or Blount. Please don't set it as an unmerged match again; it goes into no man's land at that point and gets forgotten... If it's not a duplicate, then detach the spouse that doesn't belong. Thanks.
Emily Blount c. 1650 - c. 1718 would be the profile's correct assignment, after much research. Parents: Edmond / Edmund Blount (1627-1694) & Judith Rhodes (1625-1650). I added John Pike as Em's spouse before realizing this had gone to protected status.

The child that needs added is Unknown-351349. Best to resolve these LNAB as unknown, and the missing parents and her missing child need added. Evidence from 2 indexes: a) Surname: England, Select Marriages, 1538–1973 Birth, Marriage & Death Name Emm Pike Spouse John Nickson (sic) Marriage 1 Jan 1683 Temple Church of England, London, London, England

b) Poor child: North Carolina, Marriage Index, 1741-2004 Birth, Marriage & Death Name Afraca (sic) Smithwick Spouse Benjamin Blount Marriage North Carolina

Please advise, I'm on hold! Thanks

Other than family trees which are mostly unsourced )-:, does anyone avtually see that Emily Pike, wife of John Pike of London, maiden name's is BLOUNT ? She is only written as " Emma" in the childrens' baptisms. Please post the source for her maiden name here in the commenst. Thanks. Also I will post query to G2G for helping with her maiden name.
