Charles had two older sisters and one younger brother. He graduated in the Culver Military Academy Class of 1912. He was a Coal mine operator during WWI and was in Officer Training at Camp Lee, VA at end of war. Business entrepreneur for rest of life as active owner and manager of retail coal, ice manufacturing, and a freezer warehouse. He served as the mayor of Marble Cliff, Ohio for 22 years. He was a Freemason, Shriner, and Kiwanis member. Served as Kiwanis club president and perfect attendance for more than 60 years. Quite active in retail coal merchant and ice industry associations. He was a member of First Community Church in Marble Cliff. Charles and his wife, Cleo Margaret Swaim, had three sons, Charles III, James S, and Jack Martin.
