The parents listed for this individual are speculative and may not be based on sound genealogical research. Sources to prove or disprove this ancestry are needed. Please contact the Profile Manager or leave information on the bulletin board. James Bodine is widely presumed to be son of Daniel Britton and Apphia, who come from a long line of older New Jersey settlers. However, the difference in the name, and the presumption that James is an Irish immigrant, makes that connection rather suspect. The probable confusion comes in the fact that those parents had a son, Nicholas Britton, who lived in the same area, and so may have been confused with an Irish immigrant Nicholas Bordine, who may or may not also be a brother of this James Bodine.

I received the following information from Willis Bodine [Bodine-309] on December 23, 2021:

Research Notes

Note: This was an orphaned profile, so I took over as the profile manager in Dec 2021 when I found resistance to disconnecting "Bodine" and "Bordine" males from Daniel Britton's profile. There are a lot of children listed here for James Bodine and Hester Houch. I don't think it is possible they had all these children. The dates alone are difficult to believe. Much more research on this family needs to be done.
Susan Koehler has had correspondence with Jim Berdine: His ggggrandfather was James Berdine, born 1726-27. He was married to a Hester Houch. Records exist of their membership in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Frederich, Maryland. The names of children are recorded by LDS. This James may have been the brother of Nicholas Berdine, Sr. (the father of Susan's ancestor, Nicholas) but the dates don't seem to support this.
Here is a message from Joan Best in response to a message by Jim Berdine.

James, I have been looking at your Berdine Family. I think that James Berdine was the son of John Bodine who is found in the 1800, 1810, 1820 census in Whitley. Levi is in the 1820 census also as Levi Bodine, living next to his father-in-law, Joseph Fox. I think Levi's father James Bodine had already died. This is what I think happened. James brother Samuel, about 1817 moved to Wayne Co. Ohio. In about 1823 Levi dies and his wife, Rebecca Fox Bodine, stays next to or with her parents. The rest of the Bodine clan moved to Ohio: John, Sr., Thomas, John, Jr. The only Bodines left are Levi's children, brought up in the Fox family. The name is changed at this point from Bodine to Berdine, perhaps as a result of southern dialect. I have noticed that this changed has happened more often in the south. I understand the Joseph Fox family was from Virginia. By the way, Samuel Bodine was also married to one of Joseph Foxes daughters. John Bodine, Sr. applied for a Rev. War pension from Wayne Co. Ohio. There is a marker there for him. It is on the internet.
From James to Joan Best:
My grandfather moved to Hundred, WV about 1905 from New Freeport, Greene County, PA. All of the children were born in Greene co. The lineage is as: James Burdin and Hester Houch, I have from the loical LDS that they came from Ireland, another LDS source says she was born in Aleppo township, Greene. They had John, James (KIA Rev) Levi-my gggfa, Hester Ann, and some more. Levi married an Indian ,hadtwo children, then married Rebecca Fox, my gr.gr fa was James Berdine, then James Milton Berdine, my fa Fred and then me James Milton-also. I have found about 16 different spellings of Berdine. The James Burdin was taxed in Bedford co in 1771, then Westmoreland the next year and then I have lost him. The area where most of the decesdants were born is Whitely township, Aleppo, Springhill (my father and his siblings) We have a reunion again this July in Washington, Washington County. PA. I now live in NC but go north pretty regular. Still some family there. Jim: Note: [Cham.ftw]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Disconnecting the alleged Britton parents because the list of heirs in will of Daniel Britton (1676-bef.1733) rules out the possibility that his son Daniel Britton had children Nicholas Bodine and James Bodine.

Why would he give "his" children a different surname?

There are no records of Daniel having more than three children (some think one died very young - although there is no proof of that, thus far.) Neither the well researched, with resources, the published BRITTON Genealogy nor the published STILLWELL FAMILY (both are about 700+ pages long) record any other children b. to Daniel than Nicholas Britton and Elizabeth Britton, not to mention his father's Will.

Curious to know why you think he'd name two sons (both reached adulthood) "Nicholas" one with someone else's last name?

I think common sense combined with records and two published genealogies should be proof enough these two named "Bordine" and "Bodine" belong to other parents.

I guess you are talking to me, because I am a Project Leader for the project that controls the PPP setting on the Britton profile that was formerly set as his father. As such, I don't have a personal interest or a strong opinion on the genealogy of this family, but I do want to play fair by the members who have contributed the thousands of profiles that have the project as a profile manager. Somebody (possibly more than one somebody) contributed a family tree that showed a Britton as the father of some Bodines, and with no sources to refute or confirm that relationship, the path of least harm was to leave the relationship in place until somebody showed up with the needed sources.

By "showing up with sources," I mean that members ought to edit the relevant profiles to include reasonably complete source citations (ideally to primary records or other reliable sources), the content found in those sources, and (as needed) discussion of the inferences drawn from the sources or the reasoning used to reach a particular conclusion. Regarding citations, references to "BRITTON Genealogy" and "STILLWELL FAMILY" may work fine when we are chatting with relatives or people who actively research a particular surname, but they don't cut it here on WikiTree where our work is likely be scrutinized by people from outside those kinds of groups. Some WikiTreers try to insist on specific manuals of style for citations, but I would be happy with the kind of basic bibliography entries we were taught to create in junior high school (with the addition of citation entries for websites and other formats did not exist back then).

Regarding names, I used to assume that family surnames were passed from father to child in consistent form, but I have learned otherwise. Names on baptism records are not the names supplied by the fathers, but rather are the names recorded by the person who created the record, based on his understanding of what he heard the father say. If Danford and Davenport are the same name (to give one example from my New Netherland ancestry); if Oosterhout, Ostrander, and Oosteroom could be interchanged on some records (another example from my ancestry); and if Van Bommel and Wamboom are the same name (yet another example in my ancestry), I find it entirely credible that Britton/Bordine/Bodine could be different renderings of the same name. In WikiTree in general, and particularly the New Netherland Settlers Project, we do not make assumptions about ancestors' names -- instead we follow the sources (meaning contemporary records). See the New Netherland Project Naming Conventions for more specifics.

Ellen,

I have been researching Levi Bodine/Berdine for a few years and have NOT been able to find any document that names his parents.

I especially have not been able to find information on James Berdine or his wife in Greene County, Pa or else where. It doesn't mean there isn't any but I have not been able to find it. I have not seen anyone else have any either other than citing other peoples trees. There is a James Burden who lived in Washington Co for a short time and moved to Kentucky (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Burden-61). He does not appear to be Levi's father. There is a Job Burdon who lived in Washington or Fayette County, Pa and then moved to Ohio. His family were Quakers. He had a son named Levi who is the 1810 Census. This Levi married Rhoda and they moved to Ohio. This couple is well documented in Quaker records. A lot of people used this Levi's records as documentation for the Levi who married Rebecca Fox.

There is a John Berdine/Verdine who lived in Monongalia County, (West) Virginia, Greene County, Pa, Ohio and the last record I have found for him is the 1840 Tyler County. (West) Virginia Census. He thought his last name was Verdin instead of Berdine. He is listed in the early Monongalia County Tax list and on their delinquent list. In fact his land was sold for not paying taxes on it. I think he had money troubles because I also found him on the Overseer of the Poor lists receiving help in Monongalia. He was eventually able to obtain a pension for serving in the Am Revolution. He has a profile under John Virdin (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Virden-80).

John Bodine is a different person and lived in Greene County for about 15 - twenty years. His son, Samuel, married Rebecca Fox's sister. John and Samuel both moved to Ohio and are buried in the Bodine cemetery in Ross county, Ohio. (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/36729787/john-s-bodine). Rebecca Fox Berdine remarried in 1834 to John Furbee in Monongalia County, (West) Virginia.

I continue to research all three men hoping to find a record that will prove which one is Levi's father. Levi is my 4x great grandfather. I personally think one of the John's is his father but have learned to keep an open mind. I belong to the Burden group on facebook. I will ask if the James that moved to Kentucky lived in Westmoreland County in 1771. James is the ancestor of many of the groups members so I think they will have an answer. If no one knows, I will start my research in that area looking for records on him in the FamilySearch unindexed personal tax records.

Below is a link to the tax list for Bedford County, Springhill township, 1773. I am not certain which county this may have become. There is a Springhill township in Greene County. Greene County was originally part of Bedford; Westmoreland was formed from Bedford in Feb 1773, Washington was formed from Westmoreland March 1781 and Greene was formed from Washington in Feb 1796. Bedford was formed from Cumberland March 1771.

What is the likelihood of a child being born in Ireland to parents who lived in New Jersey, British Colonial America, where their other children were born?

I say, "None". Either he was NOT born in Ireland, or he had different parents.

This should be resolved with sources.
