He attended St. Louis University High School in St. Louis. Missouri. The building was damaged by a tornado, and John did not return to school when it re-opened.[3] He attended the University of Montana for one year.[4]
At first, John worked for Western Electric Co.[5] He then began working in the newspaper business. He was on the circulation staff of the Minneapolis Star.[6] In 1936, he worked for Star-Times Publishing Co. in St. Louis, Missouri.[7] He also worked for the Globe-Democrat in St. Louis.[8]
In 1939, John began working for P. F. Collier and Son as a door to door book salesman in St. Louis, Missouri.[10] Four months later, he was promoted to District Sales Manager in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.[11] He worked in numerous other locations over the years: Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan; Chicago, Cook County, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; Long Island, New York; Redwood City, San Mateo County, California; Highland Park, Lake County, Illinois; and New York, New York.[12] In 1949, he was promoted to Vice President of P. F. Collier and Son.[13] He was elected as one of the directors of the Crowell-Collier Publishing Company in 1962.[14] He created Merit Students Encylopedia, Inc.[15] In December 1964, John was elected chairman of P. F. Collier, Inc. and director of P. F. Collier's direct sales group.[16] He received the Merit Students Encyclopedia Man of the Year Award on 15 July 1968. [17] At the time of his retirement in 1968, John was Chairman of the Board and President of P. F. Collier and Senior Vice President of Crowell-Collier-Macmillan.[18] After six months, John decided to go back to work, and returned to P. F. Collier and Crowell-Collier-Macmillan for two more years.[19] He retired again in 1970.[20]
He was a member of the Rubicon Masonic Lodge of Detroit and the Medina and Scottish Rite in Chicago.[21]
John passed away on 24 November 1977 in New York, New York.[22] He was buried on 28 November 1977 in Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood, Bergen County, New Jersey.[23]
