Research Notes

."Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia...Extracted from the original court records of Augusta County 1745-1800" This information is out of Volume I[1]

Entries for James Boggs listed below.....

"May 21, 1752 (251) Child of James Boggs, likely to become a charge on the County, to be bound out.

December 18, 1787 (442) James Bogs, 5 years old November 15, last, to Samuel Steele, blacksmith.

February 16, 1796 (407-409) James Boggs, aged 12 years last November to be bound to Wm. Steel.

May 1748 Cornelius Murley vs. James Boggs and Eliza his wife, and Henry Boggs, his son. ____As. and Bat."

There was an entry for Robert Boggs and Thomas Boggs. John Boggs, Sr and Mary Keys had 4 children. They are as follows:

  1. John Boggs b. 1756 d. October 25, 1788 Lee County, Virginia;
  2. Ezekial Boggs ;
  3. Mary Boggs ; and
  4. Phoebe Boggs b. 1754 North Carolina m. abt. 1775 North Carolina Rev. John Flannery b.no date d. Jan. 1842 Lee County, Virginia.

John Boggs and Mary Keys are not the parents of James L Boggs. Even though many trees out there claim they are his parents, that doesn’t make it true. We know this because of the Boggs DNA study. The results of the study, so far, show the descendants of James L Boggs do not match the descendants of any other Boggs family in the United States. However, we do match Baugess/Boggess. You want to know more about James L’s parents, you aren’t likely to find them if you are searching for a Boggs father for James L. His father was probably a Baugess/Boggess, not a Boggs.

James L. Boggs b in Ireland 1752-d.1835 in Lawrence Co. Kentucky married 1777 in Wilkes County, North Carolina Elizabeth Jane Clement b. abt 1759 in Virginia d. abt 1810 Lee County, Virginia; a christening for a James Bogis/Bogiss in Ireland.

Name variations: Boggess, it could have been Bogis, Boggiss, Bogiss, Bogus, or any variation of how it sounds.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
