Biography

Robert Boggs was born in 1712 in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, as the 4th son and 6th child (of 8 children who lived) of James Bogg and Rebecca Moray. His parents were both Scottish Presbyterian "dissenters" whose families had been forced to flee from Scotland to Northern Ireland in the early 17th Century for religious and political reasons.

Their family history says that Robert's grand-father's original Scottish clan was "clan Livingston" of West Lothian. As John Livingston, he fled Scotland for Ireland. John and his brother Hugh were forced to live in the marshlands (bogs) near Belfast, Ulster, Ireland (obviousy not a desirable place!) and so, in defiance, they decided to call themselves the "Boggs". Hence the family surname when their descendant James Boggs and his family emigrated to America in 1724 - 1725.[1]

Robert Boggs settled in Mill Creek Hundred in New Castle County, Delaware. On March 3, 1741, at the White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church, New Castle, Delaware, he married Margaret Phoebe Robinson, born about 1721.

They raised 10 children;

  1. James Boggs, b. 16 Jan 1742
  2. William Boggs, b. 09 Sep 1746 and passed away about 1777 age 31.
  3. Robert Boggs 09 Sep 1746 in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware and died on 25 august 1827 in Cave Springs Athens, Fayetter County, Kentucky at age 80.
  4. James Boggs, born on 10 September 1747 in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware and died in August 1820 in Madison County, Kentucky, at age 72.
  5. Agnes Boggs, was born on 4 February 1749 and died before 1770.
  6. Elizabeth Boggs, was born on 11 February 1751 and died before 1804.
  7. Benjamin Boggs, was born on 12 March 1753 and died about 1777, about age 24.
  8. Moses Boggs was born on 12 November 1756 in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware and died on 22 February 1833 in Washington Township, Muskingum County, Ohio, USA, at age 76. He married Margaret Donnell and pioneered south-east Ohio.
  9. John Boggs, was born on 11 January 1759 in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware and died on 5 April 1847 in Madison County, Kentucky, at age 88.
  10. Joseph Boggs, was born on 2 January 1761 in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware and died on 13 July 1843 in Madison County, Kentucky, at age 82.

Robert's wife Margaret Robinson passed away 05 Jun 1801 at the age of 80.

Robert Boggs passed away in Delaware on April 4, 1804, three years after his wife's death. He was 92 years old. Robert was interred in the White Clay Creek Church Cemetery, Newark, New Castle County, Delaware, USA [2]
