Biography

Francis Bold of Cranshaw was born about 1518.[1]

Francis was the fourth and youngest son of Sir Richard Bold of Bold and Margaret Butler.[1] His father Richard was the son and heir of Sir Henry Bold, knight and Dulcia or Dowse Savage, the daughter of Sir John Savage.[1] [2]

Francis had siblings:

  1. Sir Richard Bold of Bold, oldest, aged over 17 in 1528, d. 1558[1], married 1) Jane, the daughter of Sir William Molyneux of Sefton,[3] 2) in 1535, Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir Thomas Gerrard of the Brynne co Lanc, knight, and 3) on 28 November 1551 at Barrow Heath in Bold, Margaret, the daughter of William Woodfall;[1] [4] [2] [5]
  2. Thomas Bold, [not born about 1501 if his older brother Richard was born in 1504], dead before 1567?[4];
  3. John Bold of North Meals co Lanc, married 1) Ann, the daughter of Sir Thomas Langton, baron of Walton, and 2) Elizabeth, the daughter and coheir to Sir Richard Atherton of North Meals (Johannes Aghton de North=Meles[5]) [not stated which was first or second wife][2], b. Abt 1515, Bold, Lancashire, England;
  4. Elizabeth b. Abt 1507, was married in 23 Henry VIII to Harry/Henry Byrom of Byrom, ar,[3] [5] or/and? Elizabeth married Chase;
  5. Anne Bold b. Abt 1499, was married to Roger Bradshawe of the Hagh[3] and/or Nicholas Butler of Rawcliff,ar,[4] [2];
  6. Margaret Bold, b. Abt 1505, was married in 14 Henry VIII to Thomas Ireland, ar, of the Hutt co Lanc, son of John Ireland[3] [4] [2];[5]
  7. Dorothy Bold, b. Abt 1511, married in 30 Henry Viii to Sir John Holcroft of Holcroft, knight, [4] [2] [5] heir of Sir John Holcroft, knight, and Anne, daughter of Ralph Standish of Standish[6];
  8. Matilda/Maude Bolds, b. Abt 1513, d. 10 Nov 1588, was married in 30 Henry Viii to Sir Richard Sherborne of Stanyhurst, co Lanc, knight, son of Thomas [4] [2] [5].

Francis married Catherine, sister of Richard Barnes, bishop of Durham.[2] [7]

His father Sir Richard, died on 16 November, 1528, and was succeeded by his eldest son Richard.[1] Francis' mother Margaret was still living in 1553.[1]

The Inquisition post mortem held after his father's death, found that Sir Richard provided for an annuity of £4 for each of his sons who should be sent to grammar school and then university; and as his heirs he named his four sons in birth order: Richard; Thomas; John; and Francis, his brother Tuger, and "the right heirs of the body of Sir Henry Bold, knight, his great-grandfather.[1]

Frances passed away about 1588.
