Mr. Fred L. Bolender 91, of Nashville, AR, died Friday November 27, 2009, in Texarkana, TX, following a long illness.
He was born March 4, 1918, in Sunbury, Ontario, Canada, the son of George Milton and Mary Ann [ Gray ] Bolender, he moved to Niagara Falls, NY as a child and was a graduate of the LaSalle High School. Fred later attended the University of Buffalo, Buffalo, NY. He served in World War II as a master Sgt., with the 193rd Tank Battalion on Onkinawa, and became a United States Citizen in Hawaii, during WW II. As a youth he enjoyed boat racing on the Niagara River and played hockey with local teams in Niagara Falls. Had it not been for World War II, he would have become a professional hockey player. He loved the game of golf and was especially proud of his hole in one.
His 39 year career in human resources, industrial relations and administrative services began with ISCO Chemical Company, in Niagara Falls, NY, then the International Minerals and Chemical Company [ later Mallinckordt Medical ] in Skokie, IL, Esterhazy, Saskatchewan and Florida locations. He was also assigned to special projects in India, England, Scotland and Ireland. Retirement years were spent in Florida and Youngstown, NY, following the passing of his wife of 64 years, Mildred, in 2007, he moved to Nashville, AR, in 2008.
Fred enjoyed painting pictures of ducks and geese in flight, and fishing Walleye on the Niagara River, Lake Erie and Maynard Lake.
Surviving are two sons, James Frederick [ Rae ] Bolender, of Waukegan, IL and Kenneth Robert [ Janet ] Bolender, of Nashville, AR, grandson, James F. [ Dawn ] Bolender, Jr., of South Elgin, IL and granddaughter, Cynthia Ann Bolender, of Chicago, IL, great grandchildren, Grant, Drew and Lucas Bolender, a brother, Don Bolender, of Quincy PA, several nieces, nephews, cousins and a multitude of friends. He was predeceased by his brothers George, Jack and Ted Bolender, sisters, Hazel Gidlow, Helen Press and Gracie Bolender.
The family will be present at the RHONEY FUNERAL HOME, NIAGARA FALLS, 1124 Ontario Avenue, Thursday from 11 AM to 1 PM, where funeral services will be held at 1 PM, with the Rev. John Timmerman, officiating.
Burial with military honors will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Niagara Falls, NY
