Jane (Bolton) Longmore migrated from England to Utah Territory, United States.
Jane Bolton was born on 30 March 1810 in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.
She was baptized at the parish church of St Mary Magdalen in Oxford on 20 April 1810, as the daughter of Richard and Sarah Bolton.[1][2][3][4][5]
Family
Jane first marriedRichard Hall (b. 1814, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England) on 25 August 1835 in St Mary Magdalen church in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England. [2] She had four children with Richard:
Jane Hall; (b. 1835, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England)
Ann Hall[6]; (b. 1836, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England , d. 1839, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England)
Richard Jeremiah Hall[7]; (b. 1838, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England, d. 1869, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States)
Following her husband's [Richard Hall] death in 1843, Jane married a second time to Henry Longmore, "a bachelor, of full age", on 16 January 1844 at St Mary Magdalen church in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England. [3]
She had three children with Henry:
Henry Charles Longmore (b. 1844, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England, d. 1897, Mesa, Maricopa, Arizona, Unite States)
George Longmore; (b. 1846, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England, d. 1870, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States)
Eliza Hale Longmore; (b. 1848, Bridgnorth, Shrophire, England, d. 1917, Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States).
In 1851 Jane Longmore (age 41) was living at Bernards Hill in Bridgnorth with her husband Henry and their children, including her children from her first marriage. Her birthplace was given as St Marys, Oxfordshire.[4]
In 1861 Jane (age 51) was living at Twerton in Somerset with her husband and their children. Her birthplace was given as City [of] Oxford.[9]
Religious Immigration to United States
Monarch of the Sea
Jane was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 28 May 1854. [10] As part of the great "gathering of saints", Jane, her husband Henry, and at least three of her children (Martha Hall, Henry Longmore, and Eliza Longmore) immigrated to the state of Utah, United States. On 28 April 1864, Jane left Liverpool on the Monarch of the Sea[11]; destination — New York City. Once in the United States, she traveled to Utah in the John Murdock Handcart Company of 1864[12] arriving on 26 August 1864. She re-united with her husband who had come over a couple of years earlier and was living in Lehi, Utah, a small community 47 km south of Salt Lake City.[13][14]
Death
Jane died at the age of 85 on 28 October 1895 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah, United States.[5]
Research Notes
Research Question: Where and when was Jane Bolton born and/or baptized and who where her parents?
Hypothesis 1: She was baptized in Oxford, Oxfordshire in 1810 and born in the same parish, then moved to Shropshire.
A baptism record for St Mary Magdalen church in Oxford, Oxfordshire, asserts that a Jane Bolton, daughter of Richard and Sarah Bolton was baptized 20 April 1810.[1]. The concern with assigning the record to this profile is that Oxford is about 150 km (94 miles) from Bridgnorth and there is no known record of either Jane or her family making this move. Additional evidence is needed that the Jane represented by this record later moved to Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England.
A church marriage record for Jane Boulton in St Magdalen, Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England indicates that her father was Richard Boulton; this ties the Jane Bolton (who married Henry Longmore) to the correct name of the father of the Jane born in Oxford.[3]
The 1851 and 1861 English census both record that Jane Longmore, wife of Henry Longmore, was born in Oxford.[4][9]
Hypothesis supported by evidence.
Research Question: When did Jane join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, thus prompting her emigration from England?
Hypothesis 1: Jane was baptized with some members of her family sometime between 1837 (when the missionaries first travelled to England) and 1864, when Jane left for Utah.
According to Jane's ordinace page on FamilySearch, Jane was baptized and confirmed on Monday, 28 May 1854.[10] Based on the 1851 England census, it can be inferred that she was residing in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, England.[4] Her son, Henry Charles was baptized and confirmed 6 years later, 26 August 1860.[15]. Eliza Hale Longmore was baptized sometime before 1868; the date temple ordinances were completed.[16]
Hypothesis supported.
Research question: On which ship and in which pioneer company did Jane and her family immgrate?
Hypothesis 1: She traveled with family members from England to Utah sometime after her baptism in 1854.
A search of a "Saints by Sea" website hosted at Brigham Young Unversity revealed Jane Longmore, Henry Longmore, Eliza Longmore, and Martha Hall traveled on the Hudson, leaving London on 3 June 1864 and arriving in New York on 19 July 1864.[17] On the same website, a second family grouping of Jane Longmore, Henry Longmore, Eliza Longmore, and Martha Hall were found on the passenger list of the Monarch of the Sea, leaving Liverpool, England on 28 April 1864 and arriving in New York on 3 June 1864.[11]Assumed: booking on the later ship, Hudson, was a backup to the earlier arrangements and was canceled. Further research required to determine which of the two ships carried the family to the United States.
Assuming that the family took the earlier ship (see #1 above) passenger arrival records for New York were reviewed. A record was located showing Jane Longmore, Henry Longmore, Eliza Longmore, and Martha Longmore as passengers on the Monarch of the Sea arriving 3 June 1864.[18]. Though the list asserted that Martha's surname was Longmore, her age corresponds to the proper age of Martha Hall.
In a negative evidence check, a search was made of arriving passenger list into New York between 18 July 1864 and 20 July 1864 (the Hudson was scheduled to arrive on 19 July 1864). All ship arrivals were reviewed; no ship named Hudson arrived.
A search of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint History site looked for Jane Longmore and her family traveling in a handcart company to Utah. The family travelled in the John Riggs Murdock Company of 1864, leaving from Wyoming, Nebraska on 29 June 1864 and arriving in the Salt Lake Valley 26 August 1864.[12] This departure date fits the timeline of their arrival on the Monarch of the Sea; had they come on the Hudson they would have arrived too late to travel with the John Murdock company.
Results: Jane left Liverpool, England on the Monarch of the Sea with her children, Henry, Eliza, and Martha on 28 April 1864 and arrived in New York, United States on 3 June 1864. They joined the John Murdock Company traveling west; leaving Wyoming Nebraska on 29 June 1864 and arriving in the Salt Lake Valley 26 August 1864. Hypothesis supported by evidence.
