James was married twice; first to Mary Snoad, who died before 1782. they had 10 known children. She was the daughter of Colonel John Snoad and his wife Elizabeth who came to North Carolina and settled in the Pamlico Section about 1720 and died there in 1743.
James married secondly to Mary Maule. They had one son. Mary was the daughter of Dr. Patrick Maule and his wife Elizabeth of Bath, North Carolina who died before June 1736.
Bonner's will was written 25 December, 1782, and recorded at Beaufort County Courthouse in their Will Book OW on pages 177-178-179.[3]
James was a member of the House of Commons in the Colonial Assembly of 1769. James Bonner was the driving force to establish the town of Washington, NC, which became the County Seat of Beaufort County in late 1775.
James was a twin to his brother Thomas.
