Biography

He is the son of William Bonney and Ellen Parkinson.

James was in the great lifeboat disaster of 1886. He was on the St Annes lifeboat, Laura Janet, when it capsized with the loss of all crew on 9th December 1886 attempting to rescue 12 sailors from the german barque Mexico. He left a widow and one child. He had previously been a member of the St Annes lifeboat crew, but owing to a personal dispute, had left and had only recently rejoined. His body was found about two miles on the Formby side of the Mexico. Some sources give his address as Common Lane but this was the original name for Church Road and it is possible that the old name still lingered on (courtesy the Great Lifeboat disaster of 1886 -J.Allen Miller)
