1774 September 22: Will of John Bonwell, dated ... and proven August 29, 1775, To wife Mary whole estate during her widowhood for the maintenance and education of my 5 children, to-wit: Charles, Hannah, Arthur and Smith Bonwell and unborn child, and for the boarding of all my other children. Should my wife marry or die before my 5 children be educated equal to my elder children, then my son James Bonwell to take my estate into his possession and fulfil this my will. Sister Leah Bonwell. Ballance of estate to be divided between my wife and children except James when my youngest child arrives to the age of 12 years. To son James Bonwell my plantation where I now live, also my land and marsh on or near Gilford Creek, also the moiety of a water grist mill I now hold in part with Major Ironmonger, lying on the South branch of Onancock. Son Thomas Bonwell. Wife Mary, James Bonwell and Thomas Bonwell executors. Witnesses John Smith, Mikeel [Michael] Bonwell, James Bonwell and William Kennahorn.
