Biography

George Booth, Esq., son and heir of William Booth, Knt., and his first wife, Margaret Ashton[1][2] (or Assheton), was born about 1490, (aged 29 in 1519, when his father died),[3][4] probably at Dunham-Massey, Cheshire, where his father held lands. When George was young, his mother died (date unknown). His father remarried to Dorothy Mongomery. From this marriage George gained eight half-siblings.[1][3]

Sir Thomas Ashton, George's grandfather, died in 1514, leaving George, son of his daughter Margaret (deceased), along with his other two daughters, Elizabeth and Alice, as his heirs.[5][6] George's father died in 1519 and George was his main heir.[2][5]

George married Elizabeth Boteler, daughter of Thomas Boteler, Knt.,[1][2][5] and Margaret Delves.[3] The date of their marriage is unknown and is estimated. George and Elizabeth had three sons and seven daughters:

George died on 25 October 1531.[3][5] His widow, Elizabeth, survived him. George left a will dated 6 October 1531.[3][7] His son, George, aged 15 years, was his heir. In his will, George also left lands to his son, John.[5][7]

In the chapel of his grandfather, Sir George Booth, in the Bowdon church, in Bucklow Hundred, there was on a marble stone "with brasse about it the picture of a man and woman, engraven in brasse, with theire children as followeth":[8]

"Of your charity pray for the soules of George Bouthe, esq. and Elizab. his wife, dau. of s'r Tho. Dorothy, Cicely, and Alice, w'ch Geo. dyed 25th Octob. 1531, and lyeth under this stone, on whose soules Jesu have mercy. Amen."
