Born in 1808, in the Montague area, Cape Colony. Educated in Swellendam and Graaff-Reinet under tutelage of Scots preacher Wm Robertson. Presented with an atlas in 1824; on the cover was written "Eereprys der Naarstigheid". Aged 16 yrs, entered the employ of the Civil Commissioner's Office in Graaff-Reinet. Aged 19 yrs, he married Adriana P.G. Van Aswegen, aged 16 yrs; she came from the Sneeuberg district. He continued living in Graaff-Reinet, working for the magistrate. In 1838 the Voortrekkers in Natal wrote to relatives, seeking assistance. Jacobus and his brother, Johann, joined the volunteers and set out for Natal on 30.04.1838; they reached the top of the Drakensberg on 19.05.1838. They assisted the Trekkers where they could and also visited Port Natal, eventually getting back to the Cape Colony on 03.07.1838. As he had been away from his civil service post for more than six weeks, Jacobus lost his employment; so he and his brother, Johann, together with their families, decided to join the Trekkers in Natal. As well has being granted farming land in Natal, the brothers settled in Pietermaritzburg. On 16.01.1841, Jacobus was elected a member of the Volksraad and three days later, Magistrate of Pietermaritzburg. In 1845 he was appointed Registrar and Master of Supreme Court. In 1855 he was elected (second) President of the Orange Free State; an office which he held for four years. In 1859 he returned to his farm "Joubertsvlei", Mooi River, Natal. He became a Member of the Natal Legislative Council for Klip River County. In 1878 his wife, Adriana, died and he withdrew from political life. In 1880, whilst on a trip back to the O.F.S, he met a distant relative, Louisa Perry (widow van den Berg). On 25.06.1880, he married Louisa in Greytown, Natal, and the couple settled in their home in Pietermaritzburg. During 1881, he became very ill and died 21.04.1881. He is buried in the Voortrekker Cemetery in Pietermaritzburg, together with his first wife Adriana, his father who died in 1844, and other members of the extended Boshoff family.
