Contents

Biography

According to the 1850 census Sophia Bosley, was born in Maryland about 1794.[1] Ogle & Engler (2012), assert that she was born earlier and date her birth to c. 1784.[2][3] Other sources believe that she may have been born as late as 1789.[4]

Parents

This person may not belong in the family group. See the text for details.

Her parents are unknown, but some family trees assert that she was the daughter of:[5]

While Miller (1978), offers some evidence for this marital alliance,[6] records show that it was Joshua Bosley who married Ann Gott on 04 or 12 November 1779 at St. James par. in Anne Arundel co., MD.[7]

Origins

While Sophia's parentage is speculative, the Bosleys of Maryland, descend from the English immigrant and attorney, Walter Bosley (d. c. 1715), of Bosley's Palace and of Baltimore Co. It's also the case that Sophia's given name was used by some of Walter Bosley's descendants.[8]

Marriage

Sophia married Thomas J. "T.O." Ogle in South Carolina around 1804.[2][1] They had fourteen (14) children.[9]

children

  • Easter (1806 – 88)
  • Martha (1807 – 85)
  • Harkless T Ogle (1810 – 92)
  • Rev. William Thomas Ogle (1810 – 94)
  • Nancy (1810 – 44)
  • Thomas T. Ogle (1812 – 1911)
  • Mary (1815 – 1903)
  • Isaac Thomas Ogle (1819 – 90)
  • Mariah (1821 – 56)
  • Eliza (1823 – 1910)
  • Preston Ogle 1827 – 64
  • Levi Ogle (1829 – 67)[10]
  • Caleb Ogle 1831 – 93
  • Sophia Elvira (1833 – 97).[11]

Residence

  • 1850: Sevier, TN[1]

Death

Sophia died on 13 Jul 1857 in Gatlinburg, Sevier co., TN.[2]

Notes

  • The Bosley and Tipton families of Baltimore co., Maryland were allied through marriage. Hannah Price (c. 1702 - 76) married twice to 1.) William Tipton & 2.) John Bosley.
  • In England, the Bosleys are seen in co. Cheshire;[11] co. Staffs.[12]
  • If she did descend from Walter Bosley of Baltimore, then it seems more likely that her father could have been Capt. James Bosley, son of Charles Bosley of Arthur's Choice (b. 13 May 1714; will 10 Jul 1759) & Elizabeth Cox. ... Capt. James was capt. of Horse during the American Revolution and relocated from Baltimore to Tenn. ... It's also the case that James had a brother named, "Caleb", who married Elizabeth Wheeler in c. 1772.. As seen above Sophia Bosley, also name one of her sons, "Caleb."
Family of Charles Bosley of Arthur's Choice
Another possibility is that she was Sophie, dau. of James Bosley & Temperance Marsh, although that Sophie was said to have died during infancy.[12]

Q & A

  • Is it possible that Sophia Bosley was acquainted with some members of the Ogles of Frederick, MD?
