Research Notes

  • The SAG Families Register incorrectly lists his marriage date as 26.2.1738. It also incorrectly lists the marriage to Sophia (Feijte) van Rooyen as the second marriage of Jacobus (Bota) Botha (bef.1717-1787).[1] The marriage record clearly states that he was a "J. M" (jong man) and that he was Jacobus de jonge, which confirms the marriage to this Jacobus.[3]
  • Possibly married Magdalena (Munniks) Bota (abt.1700-) in 1751[4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jacobús by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jacobús:

Hi Mary, also add the project profile [email address removed] ) to the trusted list of this profile [Privacy Tab] and then also activate it as active manager to this profile, please? Thanks, Philip
Two brothers - Theunis (1686) and Jacobus (1692) - married two sisters - Maria Magdalena Snijman (1693) and Elsij Snijman (1697). Their sons, both named Jacobus, were both christened (gedoopt) on the same day.

Why is there so much conflation of details between Jacobus Botha and Jacobús Bota / Botha? Is there the possiblity that they are one and the same person? Why the same date of baptism, and Snijman as family? They do have different fathers; is there an explaination for this?

Hi Mary

Please see the baptismal record attached that clearly state the LNAB as Bota.

Please change to Bota (LNAB0 and Botha (Current) Thanks Susan

I have been requested to make the LNAB as Bota. I do not feel I have sufficient knowledge as to which surname is the LNAB - Both, Bota, Boota. I am also not sure as to when the name changed from Both to Bota to Boota to Botha; nor how to show this. Please advise. Mary Rudd
