Biography

Jean-Baptiste Boucher was half Cree and half French and served the Hudson's Bay Company in the capacity of Interpreter in the New Caledonia District from 1822 until his death in 1849. His Cree name was "Waccan".

Originally married to the daughter of a Carrier chief for a brief period, his second marriage was to Nancy McDougall, the Metis daughter of North West Company clerk James McDougall.

As an employee of the North West Company as early as 1806, he was a canoeman with Simon Fraser, who explored the rivers of British Columbia and discovered Stuart Lake.

He passed away in 1849 in what is now known as Fort St. James, British Columbia, Canada.
