Marie Bourg was born in 1645 in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France, daughter of Antoine Bourg (abt. 1609–aft. 1687) and Antoinette Landry (abt. 1618–aft. 1693).[1]

Marie (15) married Vincent Breau (29) (born about 1631 in France) in 1661 in Acadie.[2]Between around 1662 and 1685, Marie gave birth to 12 children:[1] Their children were:

  1. Marie Breau (1662–1749) .
  2. Antoine Breau (abt. 1666– ) .
  3. Marguerite Breau (1668–aft. 1714) .
  4. Pierre Breau (abt. 1670–aft. 1757) .
  5. Unknown Breau (abt. 1671– ) .
  6. Anne Breau (abt. 1673–1707) .
  7. François (Brault) Breau (abt. 1674–abt. 1756) .
  8. Jean Breau (abt. 1678–1751) .
  9. Marie Breau (abt. 1680–1742) .
  10. René Breau (abt. 1683–1768) .
  11. Jeanne Breau (1684–abt. 1727) .
  12. Elizabeth Breau (abt. 1685–aft. 1725)

In 1671, they had started their family. Marie was 26 with four young children at home.[3]. They expanded their family with two more children by 1678 and owned 3 arpents of cultivable land.[4]

In 1686, at Port Royal, Marie Bourg appeared twice in the census.[5]

First, she appeared as Marie BOURC [sic], aged 50 [sic], widow of Vincent BREAU, along with ten children: Antoine, aged 22 [sic], Marguerite, aged 18, Pierre, aged 16, Anne, aged 14, Francois, aged 12, Jean, aged 11 [sic], Marie, aged 9 [sic], Jeanne, aged 6, Rene, aged 3, and Susanne [recte Elizabeth], aged 2 months. The family was living on 3 arpents of cultivable land with 6 cattle, 4 sheep and 6 hogs.

Later, she appeared as Marie BOURC [sic], aged 41, widow of Vincent BROT [sic], along with the same ten children: Antoine, aged 20, Marguerite, aged 18, Pierre, aged 16, Anne, aged 17 [sic], Francoise [recte Francois], aged 11 [sic], Jeanne [recte Jean], aged 9, Marie, aged 7, Jeanne, aged 5 [sic], Rene, aged 3, and Isabelle [sic], aged 5 months. The family was living on 4 arpents of cultivable land with 10 cattle, 5 sheep and 5 hogs.

She raised her children on her own for many years. Her fortunes seemed to have improved over time, with the 1693 Census showing she had 12 arpents of land, more sheep and pigs, and a gun, along with eight children still at home.[6][7][8][9][1] She was not found in any of the censuses after 1714.

Marie died on September 19, 1730 in Annapolis Royal (formerly Port Royal, Acadie) and was buried "at the top of the river" the same day. She was 86.[1][10]

DNA. Marie's mother was Antoinette Landry. The Mothers of Acadia Maternal DNA project conducts research to verify their origins. They have reported she is an H haplogroup.here. Other test results were also reported here. Numerous descendants have reported an H haplogroup, indicating European origins.

Research Notes

There are discrepancies concerning the number of daughters in the 1714 census in Port-Royal. The Tim Hebert transcription incorrectly indicated one daughter. The Dictionnaire généalogique des familles acadiennes (p. 270), the transcription from Library and Archives Canada and the original census all showed two daughters.
