Biography

Marie Madeleine Bourg was born about 1716 in Acadia, Colony of Nova Scotia. She is the daughter of Abraham Bourg and Marie Theriot.

Madeleine married Ambroise Hebert about 1735 in Acadia and they had nine children.[1][2]

  1. Marie Madeleine Hebert ca 1736-1760
  2. Basile Hebert ca 1740-1760
  3. Françoise HEBERT ca 1743-1762
  4. Ambroise HEBERT ca 1747-1813
  5. Jean Pierre HEBERT ca 1749-1824
  6. Isaac Hebert ca 1751-1822
  7. Remy Hebert ca 1753-1758
  8. Pelagie Hebert ca 1755-1758
  9. Timothée Hebert ca 1757-1758

Marie Madeleine was age 36 when she and her family were recorded in the census of 1752. [3][4] In the early days of the Seven Years War (a.k.a. the French and Indian War) in late 1755, the family probably escaped from the initial deportations by going to Ile Saint-Jean, which was still a part of New France. By June 8 1758, the British had laid siege to the last French stronghold, the fortress at Louisbourg. On July 26, 1758, the British siege of Louisbourg succeeded and exposed the now vulnerable Acadians to another wave of expulsions.

On September 4, 1758, Marie Madeleine's oldest daughter and namesake married François Moyse at Saint-Pierre-du-Nord.

Ultimately, Marie Madeleine, her husband, Ambroise, and her nine children were deported by the British on ships bound for France. [5]

She died about 1758, probably at sea while crossing to France during the deportations. Her three youngest children, Remi, Pelagie, and Timothée also died during the deportations.
