Biography

ANNE BOUDROT, veuve CHARLES BOURG, is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana, on Plaque 1 Left. Listed with her are their children, MARGUERITE, GERTRUDE, L'ANGE, JOSEPH and LOUISE[1]

Joseph Bourg, son of Charles Jacques Bourg and Anne Boudrot, was born around February 1751 in Tracadie, Isle St. Jean, Acadia. Joseph was eighteen months old and the sixth child listed with his parents when Sieur de la Roque conducted a census of the area in 1752.[2] After the deportations began in 1755, he and his family were either deported to the British colonial American eastern seaboard to be detained for the duration of the war, or they were imprisoned at Halifax. Upon their release in the summer of 1763, they decided to immigrate.

Joseph traveled with his widowed mother, Anne Boudrot, and four of his siblings to Louisiana, where the family first settled in Cabanocey, lower St. James Parish, in April 1766.[3] By 1771, Joseph had moved from Cabanocey and settled in the Attakapas area served by the Catholic parish of St. Landry, at the Opelousas Post.[4] He was counted again in 1774;[5] in 1777, and in 1785.[6]

He married a fellow Acadian, Susanne Thibodeau around 1783 in St. Landry Parish, and the couple raised at least ten children there.[7]

He died in January 1806 in St. Landry parish, Louisiana, and was buried at the parish cemetery in Opelousas on 20 Jan 1806.[8]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Thanks Cindy. As they appear on the Wall of Names, the four cousins would all be Bourgs. Karen believes they are all Bourgs and says they are together on the census of 1766: "Joseph BOURG, 26, with 5 arpents of land, 1 gun; Magdelaine, his cousin, 20; Marie [Louise], cousin, 12; Joseph, 13. [this boy]. [The three younger ones are really Joseph's 2nd cousins one time removed. All are surnamed BOURG. Their brother Ange (L'augebourg) is listed just before.]".

But on Anne Boudrot (the mother)'s profile she has the following: "named near end of Plaque 1, right side [on the wall of names]: ANNE BOUDROT, VEUVE [widow of] CHARLES BOURG [with children] MARGUERITE GERTRUDE L'ANGE JOSEPH LOUISE

I have sent her a message for clarification.

The Wall of Names treats them as different people-- Joseph Bourg born 1753 Identified in the April 9, 1766, census of Cabannocé as a twelve-year-old child residing in the household of his cousin Joseph Bourg. The census indicates that the household occupied a tract of land encompassing 5 arpents on the left bank of the Mississippi. cites: Census of Cabannocé, April 9, 1766, AGI, PPC, 187A. [Note: I haven't checked the scans of 1766 census found on the Missouri Secretary of State's website, but, a transcription says Joseph is 13, not 12.

I don't know where the Mom was in 1766 but in 1771, she was living with a daughter Gertrude in Opelousas.

Bourg-1634 and Bourg-649 are not ready to be merged because: There may be two Joseph's in the family--appear to be on the Wall of Names twice, however, these two profiles have pretty much the same information. Awaiting further research before mergeing.

If all the cousins were Joseph Bourg and his three cousins Bourg then there is only one combination that could fit this in this family that is a different Joseph from Bourg-649:

Claude had a son Joseph

Michel had three children Madeleine, Marie and Joseph.

The Joseph in Claudes family seems to be uncertain. The children in Michel's family seem to have gone to other areas, not Louisiana. So I think that combination is not likely.

If they were from a different family, it would help to know if all their names are Bourg because that would make the search a little easier.
