Biography

Patrick Walter, called Walter by his family, was born on 15 March 1896 at Queensland, the son of George Thomas Bourne and Elizabeth Lynch.

From The Brisbane Courier dated 11 December 1909, Pg 6 - LAIDLEY STATE SCHOOLS. NORTH. Laidley, December 10. The breaking up ceremony at the Laidley North State School took place this afternoon. There were only a few of the parents present. Mr. C. W. Hooper presented the prizes, and gave some useful advice to the school children ... The prize winners were: [list included] Class VI: home exercises, Annie Maxwell, Geo. Anderson, Stan. Taylor, E. Carmody, and Walter Bourne.

From The Brisbane Courier dated 23 April 1915, Pg 8 – RIFLE SHOOTING. Laidley, April 22. The first shoot of the second quarter for the Giesemann Cup was fired on Saturday. Results: [list included] P. W. Bourne (15), 83.

Then from The Queensland Times dated 4 June 1915 - RIFLE SHOOTING. Laidley v. Ipswich Railway. An interesting rifle match was shot off on the Laidley rifle range yesterday, between teams representing the Ipswich Railway Rifle Club and the local club ... Subjoined are details of the shooting: [Listed under Laidley was] P. W. Bourne 26 (300 yds) 26 (500 yds) 23 (600 yds) Total 75. Of interest Ipswich Railway had a final total of 717 (8 shooters) and Laidley 678 (8 shooters).

And from The Brisbane Courier dated 16 July 1915, Pg 7 - The annual meeting of the Laidley Rifle Club was held on Monday night. There were present: [list included] P. W. Bourne. The election of officers resulted as follows: [under committee was listed] P. W. Bourne.

From The Brisbane Courier dated 19 November 1918, Pg 7 - REJECTED VOLUNTEERS’ ASSOCIATION. Laidley, November 18. In response to a request from the Ipswich centre of the Rejected Volunteers’ Association, a meeting was held on Saturday evening, Mr. L. W. Wilkinson (president of the Ipswich centre of the R. V. A.) presiding. Mr. Wilkinson outlined the objects of the association, after which it was unanimously decided to form a centre in Laidley. Capt. H. S. Brown also addressed the meeting, and gave some valuable information in connection with the movement and that of the R.S.A. The election of officers resulted: [list included] secretary, Mr. P. W. Bourne.

[From The Queensland Times dated 3 July 1916 - REJECTED VOLUNTEERS' ASSOCIATION. The announcement is made that the inaugural meeting of the Rejected Volunteers' Association will be held at the Imperial Service Club, commencing at 8 p.m., on Saturday, 8th July. All men who have been rejected as unfit, or discharged previous to embarkation are eligible for membership. Particulars of the objects of the association may be obtained from J. Murray Johnson, hon. organising secretary, G.P.O.. Brisbane.]

In the 1919 electoral roll Patrick was shown as living at Laidley and his employment as a Commonwealth official.

From The Queensland Times dated 21 July 1921, Pg 3 - LAIDLEY SCHOOL OF ARTS. The committee of management of the Laidley School of Arts was held in the Library on Monday evening last … The librarian was asked to advise the following gentlemen that they had been nominated as committeemen in connection with the election of the new committee foe the ensuing twelve months: [list included] Messr. P. W. Bourne.

From The Queensland Times dated 18 December 1922, Pg 5 [in part] – A QUIET DAY AT LAIDLEY. Laidley, December 17. Election day passed off quietly here. The presiding officer was Mr. J. Loveday, and Mr. P. W. Bourne was assistant; polling clerks, Messrs. J. Ward and W. T. Adams; scrutineers – National, Col. T. Koch; Labour, Mr. A. R. Paroz ...

From The Brisbane Courier dated 18 December 1923, Pg 6 – PERSONAL. Mr. P. W. Bourne, who is leaving Laidley to take up a clerical position in Brisbane, was farewelled on the eve of his departure. The Laidley branch of the Licensed Victuallers’ Association presented him with a solid leather suit case, and Councillor R. Dunn, on behalf of a number of well-wishers, handed Mr. Bourne a wallet of notes. The recipient suitably acknowledged both gifts.

In the 1925 electoral roll Patrick was shown as living at Clare St, Lindum, Brisbane and working as a clerk. His mother Elizabeth Bourne and two siblings were living close by at Wynnum North, Brisbane.

By the time of the 1930 electoral roll Patrick had moved to the King George Hotel, Roma, Queensland [515 km by rail west north west of Brisbane Roma is situated at the junction of the Warrego and Carnarvon highways]. He was working as a telegraphist.

Patrick Walter Bourne married Annie Elizabeth Baldry, nee Paskins, on 19 August 1932 at Queensland. Annie was a divorced mother of five children, one of whom was at this time already married.

Annie Elizabeth Bourne died on 29 March 1933 at Queensland, aged 42 years.

From The Morning Bulletin, Rockhampton dated 30 March 1933, Pg 6 – FUNERAL NOTICE. The Friends of Mr. P. W. BOURNE and Family, of Brisbane, are respectfully invited to attend the Funeral of his deceased[?] beloved Wife, ANNIE ELIZABETH BOURNE (nee Baldry), which will leave from our Funeral Parlour, corner of Archer and Alma streets, THIS (Thursday) FORENOON, at 10 o’clock, for the North Rockhampton Cemetery. Tucker & Nankivell, Undertakers.

Annie was buried at North Rockhampton Cemetery [Church of England 1 6 805].

From the Western Star dated 26 April 1933, Pg 4 - IN THE SUPREME COURT OF QUEENSLAND. ROCKHAMPTON. In the Lands of ANNIE ELIZABETH BOURNE, late of Roma, in the State of Queensland (wife of Patrick Walter Bourne, of Roma aforesaid, Railway Telegraphist), deceased, intestate. Notice is hereby given that after the expiration of fourteen days from the publication hereof, application will be made to this Honourable Court that Administration of Real Estate of the abovenamed ANNIE ELIZABETH BOURNE, deceased, who died intestate, may be granted to PATRICK WALTER BOURNE, of Roma aforesaid, Railway Telegraphist, the lawful husband of the said deceased. Any person interested who desires to object to the application or to be heard upon it may file a caveat in the Registry of Rockhampton aforesaid, at any time before the grant is made. Dated this Twelfth day of April, 1933. Daniel P. Carey, Solicitor for the said Patrick Walter Bourne, Rockhampton.

In the 1934, 1936/37 and 1939 electoral rolls Patrick was living at Emerald, Queensland [approximately 270 kilometres west of Rockhampton], and in the 1943 electoral roll he was living at Wallangarra, Queensland [258 km south west of Brisbane, on the border between Queensland and New South Wales]. He was still employed as a telegraphist.

Patrick Walter Bourne died on 11 May 1948 at Queensland, aged 52 years.

From The Courier-Mail, Brisbane dated 13 May 1948, Pg 6 - FUNERAL NOTICES. BOURNE. Mr. Patrick Walter, Paddington Hotel, Paddington, late Railway Employee. The Relatives & Friends of the late P. W. Bourne are respectively advised that his Funeral is appointed to leave the Parlour, 400 Wickham St., To-day (Thursday) at 4 p.m., for Toowong Cemetery. Metropolitan Funerals.

Patrick was buried at Toowong Cemetery [Portion 7A, Section 183, Grave No. 13A].
