Biography

Francis Bowen was born in 1835, in Black Brook, New York, the first child of Shubael Bowen and Sarah Sargent. When he was 5 or 6 years old, and after being joined by 3 younger siblings. the whole family moved from New York back to Potton in Lower Canada, where his father had been born.

Francis, also known as Frank, first appeared on a census in 1861, residing in Potton next door to his father and siblings.[1]

He married Ruth Leonard in about 1861, but by 1871 he was back living with his parents, this time as a widower[2] Frank and Ruth had two children in their short marriage:

  1. Nancy, b. 1862, m. Lewis Peabody, and
  2. Casper, b. 1863

Frank re-married on 17 Oct. 1869, with Frances Goodspeed, daughter of Milton Goodspeed and Laura Pollard. She was born 8 June 1851 and died 7 May 1942.[3] Francis and Frances went for a time to live in Essex County, New York, in Chesterfield about 20 miles from where Frank had been born. This is where they were living on the 1880 census.[4] Frank's son Caspar from his first marriage was part of the household and they lived next door to Milton and Laura Goodspeed, presumably his wife's parents. Frank's daughter Nancy was in 1881 living with her grandmother Sarah in Potton.

On the 1891 census, Frank was living back in Potton with his wife Frances, his son Caspar and his mother-in-law Laura Goodspeed.[5]

Frank passed away in 1895 and was interred in Chapel Hill Cemetery in Potton, Quebec, near his parents.[6]
