Biography

George Bowman was born in 1787. He is the son of Johann Daniel Bowman and Ann Maria Mouser. He married Mary Catherine Isenhour, daughter of George Martin Isenhour/Eisenhauer. They had eleven children. The family migrated to Indiana between 1840 and 1850 [1] and settled first in Monroe County, later moving to a farm in Morgan County, Indiana. George Bowman died on Aug 5, 1874 and is buried in the Stierwalt Cemetery, Morgan County, Indiana. Descendants lived in Indiana and elsewhere.[2]

Rev Crouse gives the following account of George Bowman in his 1905 history of Friendship Lutheran Church in Alexander County, North Carolina:

"This was the fifth son of George Bowman, Sr. (sic, Johann Daniel Bowman). Of him and his family we are able to write very little. We have heard that he married a woman by the name of Isenhouer, but no one can tell us her baptismal name. neither have we heard the name of her father. They moved to Indianna, and all knowledge of them has been lost by the family in this state. If, in the future, this sketch of history should fall into the hands of their descendants, they may be able to make out their connection with their relatives here, which, no double, would be interesting to them, but we know of no legacy of wealth awaiting their identification."
"They had three sons and four daughters. The names of the daughters were: Mary, Betsey, Katy, and Mollie. Usually Mary and Mollie are regarded as the same name, but may not be so in this case. It is hard to catch the idea of some people in naming their children. On another page it will be found that a boy is name Charley Carl, which is only one name. It is said that one of the girls used to drive a four-horse team, which indicates vigor and push on her part. The names of the sons we do not know. Somebody has given us the name Levi Sylvester, but whether one was named Levi and one Sylvester, or one had both names we do not know. However, this little may furnish a clue for some other writer, if there should ever be one on this subject."

Research Notes

In my copy of the Crouse history, which was copied from Elbert L. Bowman's copy, there are marginal notes in George Bowman's section that state the following: "The Indiana branch: Contact Willard Bowman, R. 1, CenterPoint, Ind. or Ernestine Fox (Bowman Grand d) 2580 Diamond, San Francisco, Calif". G. Moore

There was no "George Bowman" listed in either the 1790 or 1800 Federal Census for North Carolina. The only George Bowmans in the 1810 Federal Census for North Carolina were George Bowman Deep River and Germanton, both in Stokes County, North Carolina. George was living, most likely, with his parents in this time frame.

George Bowman first appeared in the 1820 US Federal Census in Lincoln County, North Carolina and appeared in both 1830 and 1840 in Lincoln County, also. His age appears younger than what is indicated on the tombstone in Indiana. He probably married between 1810 and 1820.

There was no George Bowman in the 1850 US Federal Census for Lincoln, Alexander, or Iredell Counties. The only George Bowman in Burke County was born in 1832. In the 1850 US Federal Census for Indiana, there were only two George Bowmans born in North Carolina: George Bowman, born in 1787 in North Carolina (probably this George) and George A. Bowman, son of Edmond R. Bowman of Stokes County, North Carolina.
