Joseph Bowman, the son of Jacob Bowman and Varena Unknown, was born about 1757 in Washington County, Maryland, and died in 1830 in Rockingham County, Virginia. About 1777-80 he married Esther Bechtal of Beaver Creek, Washington County, Maryland, the daughter of Samuel Bechtal and Anna Simon. Joseph and Esther moved to Linville Creek, Virginia where he became a prosperous farmer, miller and deacon in the Linville Creek Church. They had 5 children: Elizabeth, Esther, Magdalena, Samuel, and Mary.[1]
