Biography

1776 Project
Private John Bowman served with Amherst County Militia, Virginia Militia during the American Revolution.

John Bowman was born in 1752 in Amherst County, Virginia. He was an American patriot and fought in the American Revolution in the 1770-80s.

John Bowman served as a Private with the Virginia 10th regiment under Captain Clough Shelton in the Revolutionary War. He fought battles in Pennsylvania and New York and was captured by the British and held as a POW in Philadelphia and NY State. He was released in an exchange of prisoners. He served with General George Washington at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

John had enlisted under Capt. Clough Shelton, Col. Stevens, General Scott's Brigade; he fought in the battle of Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; from there he went to winter quarters at Valley Forge; from there he was sent to the small village "Penny Packed"; in scrimmage with the British, he and 14 others were taken prisoner of war; by way of Philadelphia to New York. He was a prisoner when the Monmouth NJ battle took place. He rejoined his regiment at Brunswick, N J, and was at the battle of Stoney Point. He continued as a private soldier for three years.

At the age of 70 he was allowed a pension and after his death, his widow, Barsheba Bowman, was allowed his pension. She died Oct. 6, 1860. [1]

Family

In his will, William Harding Bowman names his wife Sarah Ball Bowman and the following children as his beneficiaries: John Bowman, Ralph Bowman, Sherwood Bowman, Gilbert Bowman, William Bowman, Elizabeth Fowles, Mary Wilkenson.Gilise Babar, Lucy Wilkerson, Sary Burkes. Susannah Bowman, Nancy Bowman and Rebecca Bowman [2]
