Johannes Bowman was born on December 19, 1738, in Cedar Creek, Orange, later Frederick, Virginia to Hans Georg Baumann and Mary Hite. He married Elizabeth McClung Bryan in 1764 in Augusta, Virginia. He died on May 4, 1784, in Lincoln, Kentucky, at the age of 45, and was buried in Burgin, Kentucky.
