Biography

Robert Edmond Boyd was probably born in Ireland about 1758, the son of Robert Boyd and Mary, his wife.[1]

When he was 9 years old, he immigrated with his family to America aboard the immigrant ship "Nancy," departing Belfast and arriving at Charles Town, South Carolina about 15 Jun 1767. The family is shown as Robert Boyd (age 51), Mary Boyd (age 50), William Boyd (age 18), Andrew Boyd (age 14), Robert Boyd (age 9), and Agnes Boyd (age 6).[1]

He was registered as Robert Boyd when married Susannah Thurmond on 3 Apr 1785, in South Carolina.[2] Susannah was registered as Susannah Myers, a widow. (Note that this entry appears to be from the "private minutes" of Rev. Lewis Jones and not an entry in the actual St. Helena's Parish register. If so, it is possible that this marriage was performed at the couple's home and not in the parish church, located about 125 miles southeast of Edgefield County.)

Based on the immigration ship’s passenger list and his marriage record, his first name appears to be Robert. Subsequent show that he was perhaps informally known as Edmund. It seems likely that Edmond was his middle name, and he perhaps went by Edmond to differentiate him from his father, Robert.

In the 1790 census for Edgefield County, South Carolina, he was enumerated as Edmund Boyd, with a household of 4 males under 16, 2 males 16 and older, and four females.[3]

Edmund Boyd was of Edgefield County, South Carolina when he made his will on 18 Oct 1800 (filed 24 Dec 1800 and recorded in Book A, page 356, on 22 Sep 1801). He named his wife, Susannah Boyd, and his son, John Boyd. Elizabeth Lyon is also mentioned by name, her relationship is not mentioned, but indications are that she is a married daughter. Other, underage children are indicated, but not mentioned by name. His wife, Susannah, and his son, John, are named to be executors.[4]

Given that he had an adult son (John) and possibly a married daughter (Elizabeth Lyon) in 1800, it seems likely that Edmund had a previously unidentified first wife prior to his 1785 marriage to Susannah.
