Biography

Alan Boyd, was the son of Robert de Boyt and he commanded the Scottish archers at the siege of Perth, held by Edward Baliol, and was killed there in August, 1339.[1] Note: In 1332, the pretender Edward Balliol, son of John of Balliol, invaded to claim the throne of Scotland with the backing of Edward III of England. Robert the Bruce had died three years previously, and the regent of his infant son David II fell quickly at the hands of Balliol's army at the battle of Dupplin Moor. Balliol took Perth and the throne in September,1332 and the Scottish Civil War ensued.[2]

Alan Boyd killed at the Siege of Perth, 1339 when in command of the Scottish Archery.

Robert the Bruce had been succeeded on the throne by his five-year-old son and in 1332 after his Guardian died, Edward Balliol, son of John Balliol, tried to regain his fathers throne. Edward the Third supported him in this attempt and the Scottish Army was defeated south of Perth at Dupplin Moor. Edward Balliol captured Perth on the way to be crowned at Scone and renewed the defenses with a short-lived earthen wall which was soon removed when the burgh was retaken after Balliol left.

Edward the Third came to Perth again in each of the next three years and ordered re-fortification with a more substantial wall of stone with "towers, gates and cornices". Together with a wide ditch the new wall prevented the Scots from retaking the city again until 1339. This new wall remained standing until the eighteenth century.

Boyd-3284 and Boyd-2539 appear to represent the same person because: Same father. There is a problem with the birth and death dates. One profile has him born about 1322, the other has his death in battle in 1333, when he would be about 11 if the birth date is correct.
