Rebecca Boyd was born about 1772 (an estimate of twenty years before her marriage), now proven as the daughter of Patrick Boyd, Jr. and wife Ezard of Halifax, Virginia.
Rebecca married Sylvester Adams, son of John and Susan (Wood) Adams, on 9 February 1792, in Halifax County, Virginia.[2]
Sylvester Adams, wife Rebecca and family moved with a colony of relatives to West Tennessee between the years 1805 and 1808. At least Sylvester and Rebecca as well as any existing children settled in Humphreys County, Tennessee.
Sylvester and Rebecca had the following thirteen children: sons in order of birth, John, Samuel, Sylvester, Thomas, Boyd, William, and Ichabod; daughters in order of birth, Susan, Rebecca, Sarah, Martha, Isabella, and Ann. These children moved with their uncle Sylvester to Tennessee around 1808. (Please note that, while providing the order of birth for sons and, separately, daughters, Ref [1] provides birth dates for only three of these children and the marriage date of their mother. Hence, providing birth estimates for each person’s profile is a challenge which, of course, may be incorrectly done.)
Rebecca (Boyd) Adams died 19 January 1839, probably in Humphreys County, Tennessee.
Research Note
There is a complication to the biography as originally written here which was referenced in Phil E. Chappell's Book (source) where the author identified Rebecca Boyd as the daughter of George Boyd which per Halifax, Virginia, court orders has been proven incorrect. Rebecca was not mentioned in the Halifax, Virginia, will of this George Boyd, Senr., dated 9 January 1803 and recorded in February 1803. George Boyd Senr. in his will of 1803 named only two daughters, Elizabeth Boyd Adams, wife of William Adams, and Hannah Boyd Adams, widow of Richard Adams, deceased. [3][4]
Halifax County, Virginia, probate and county court records identified Rebecca Boyd as daughter of Patrick Boyd, Jr. and Ezard his wife, who married 2nd to a Billington Dunn when she received her dower right in the Estate of her first husband, Patrick Boyd, deceased, Halifax, Virginia, December 1782 court filing.[5] Billington Dunn was appointed guardian of Patrick Boyd's children February 1785 and returned an account of guardianship to the Halifax court August 1785.[6][7] Sylvester Adams and wife Rebecca Boyd Adams and her sisters Rachel, Leah, and Anne Boyd by Halifax County court orders received their one fourth part inheritance as children and legatees from Patrick Boyd's estate in May and August 1793 court proceedings.[8][9]
