Biography

Early Years - Helen M. Boyd born 1824 in Caldwell County, Kentucky was the daughter of John Boyd and Mildred Goodall Boyd both of Virginia. She married her future husband Presley N.O. Thompson of Christian County, Kentucky in Pike County, Illinois on July 31, 1844. Her three sons, John D. born 1845, Thomas P. born 1847, and Henry G. born 1849 were all born in Pittsfield, Pike County. Helen's younger brother John lived with the family during his four years at school in Pittsfield.

Pittsfield is a city in and the county seat of Pike County, Illinois, United States. Pittsfield is the self-proclaimed "Pork Capital" of the Midwest, owing to the long history of pork production in the region, which fed into the large meat-packing industry of Chicago.

An early settler of the south side was Mrs. Nancy M. Heath. Nancy Heath came to Pittsfield in 1834 as a widow with six children. She rented a small log house that stood east of the current Watson Hotel. In the winter of 1834, Nancy conducted the first school in Pittsfield from this log house. She had 14 students who each paid her $3 for 12 weeks of schooling. William Watson’s son was among the students. Mrs. Heath was born in 1791 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was considered the first white child born in that city. She was an honored member of this community in her older years, and passed away in 1880 at the age of 89.

Middle Years - Helen and her family returned to Caldwell County, Kentucky by 1850. On the 1850 Federal Census, Presley listed his occupation as "None". Helen possibly died in 1851 as her husband Presley married again for the third time. Her three boys are listed on 1860 Caldwell/Lyon County Census as living with her parents John and Mildred Boyd and their sons, John age 28, Joseph age 20, Meredith age 19, and James age 16.
