Joe was one of six known children born to Erwin Boyd and his wife, Sarah Patton. Joe married Miss Julia A. Shell; a daughter of Lewis Shell and his wife, Nancy Sallust. Joe and Julie were married on January 29, 1835 in Putnam County, Indiana. Joe was a farmer. He and Julie had six known children.
