NOTE: Issue of John BOYD and Sarah GRIFFITH; John BOYD b. Jan 1760; d. 1829; married 7 Sep 1791 Ann "Nancy" MARTIN. (page 9)
John BOYD was born in the family home just west of Martinsburg near BOYD's Gap in North Mountain in what was then called Frederick County, Virginia.
John began his Revolutionary War service as a private in Captain George WALLs' Company, Colonel Thomas ELLIOTT's 4th VA Regiment. The company muster rolls shows his pay commenced 1 Apr 1777 at the rate if $6 2\3 per month as a new recruit (age 17), and continued the next month as a wagoner. Beginning 1 Jan 1778, although his pay remained the same, he was paid two pounds in Va Currency. His term of enlistment was shown to be three years, however later in 1778 he served as a wagoner in Captain Gabriel LONG's Company,Col Daniel Morgan's Regiment, DAR #69497.
He was married to Ann "Nancy" MARTIN 7 Sep 1791 by the Reverend John David YOUNG of St. John's Lutheran Church in Martinsburg. (page 10). John and Nancy went west to Bourbon County, Kentucky in the mid-1790's. Edyth BOYD HEATON wrote that she remembered a newspaper clipping in a scrapbook compiled by Mariah (Highland) BOYD that told of three BOYD brothers coming down the Ohio River on a flatboat and landing at Maysville, Kentucky. They made their way south to what is now Bath County Kentucky where they settled.
John soon acquired 1,000 acres of land from Curtis MIDKIFF, the date of which purchase was not found in the Bourbon Co records. Nicholas County was formed in 1800 from Bourbon and Mason Counties and John was also found there in the 1810 tax list. Deed records indicate that he did not change residence but that the county boundaries changed around him. He engaged in land transactions "on the waters if Somerset Creek and Little Flat Creek". The first one on 10 Feb 1797 in Bourbon Co was a sale of 250 acres from John BOYD to Elijah BOYD (his younger brother). Other transactions were for 100 acres he sold in 1803, 186 acres on 21 Aug 1826 and 1\2 acre adjoining the town of Carlisle on 14 Jan 1828. Several of his children were married in Nicholas County and some of them accompained him late in his life to Indian Creek Township in Lawrence County Indiana, west of Bedford Indiana when he moved there in 1827. (page 11)
John BOYD died in the year 1829 and is buried in Shiloh Church Cemetery, a few miles west of Bedford in Indian Creek Township. His grave is in the SW corner of the cemetery next to the fence seperating the cemetery from the Route 158 road.
