Biography

Ireland Native
Robert Boyd was born in Ireland.

Birth & Baptism
Robert was born about 1819 in Ireland, [1] probably in Killala, Mayo. [2] The only baptismal record found so far--as well for the baptisms of three brothers born in Ireland who also immigrated to the U.S., all lining up with their names and roughly their ages--are in the Church of Ireland. They, however, were Catholics, at least in the United States.(*See Research Notes) According to this record, he was baptized on March 5, 1819. [3]

Marriage & Family
Robert Boyd married Anna Harvey in the United States, probably before the birth of their first son John (b. 1853).

Immigration, Ethnicity, and Religion
Robert was naturalized on December 21, 1846 in Jefferson County, New York. The witnesses were Patrick L. Stewart and Nelson Rulison. [4] This is the same date and witnesses on his brothers Patrick and William's naturalization records. Robert's states an immigration year of 1837, but his brother William stated 1840, and Patrick stated June 20, 1840. They might not have immigrated together, but if they did, it seems Patrick's date would be the most accurate.

Residences & Travels
1837-1840 - Immigrated from Ireland to Jefferson County, New York. Port of arrival was maybe Whitehall, New York, which is what his brother Patrick lists on his own naturalization record. [4]
1850 - Wilna, Jefferson, New York - as a brother [5]
1851 - moved to Lewis County. In the 1855 state census, he reported he had been living in the area for 4 years. [6]
1855 - Montague, Lewis, New York - as head of household. They lived next to his brother William and his family. [6]
1860 - Montague, Lewis, New York - as head of household [7]
1870 - Montague, Lewis, New York - as head of household [8]
1875 - Montague, Lewis, New York - as head of household; Neighbors are his nephews and nieces (George, Mariett, Ellen, Daniel, and Rosa), and their mother Catherine. [9]
1880 - Montague, Lewis, New York - as head of household; Neighbors are his nephews and nieces (George, Mariette, Ellen, Daniel, Rosannah, and Katie), and their widowed mother Catherine [10]
1892 - Montague, Lewis, New York - as head of household. They lived near his nephew George. [11]

Education & Occupation
Robert was able to read and write [7][10] He worked as a farmer (1860, 1870, 1880, 1892) [7][8][10]

Death & Burial
Robert died of old age with a consecutive cause of pneumonia and contributing cause of influenza, on March 17, 1892 at about 5am. [1] [12] He was buried in what is now Old St. James Cemetery in Carthage, Jefferson, New York.

DNA Confirmation
Maternal relationship confirmed through AncestryDNA. Matches are seen between descendants of Robert Boyd, who was born of Christiana's 2nd marriage, and descendants of a child from Christiana's first marriage. [3]

Research Notes

Wondering if maybe Robert Sr, his father, was of the Church of Ireland and that's why they were baptized in that faith. Their parents' marriage record was also in the Church of Ireland.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:
