Walter Gerard Boyd[1]
was born on 27 January 1893,[2][3][1][4]
at 822 DuPont Street, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware,[2][1]
to William Alexander Boyd and Elizabeth Eggleton Irvin.[2][5][4]
His World War I draft registration's claim that he was born in Walliamto [?][3] is presumably a mistake for 'Wilmington'.
His middle name is sometimes spelled 'Jerard'[5] or 'Jerad',[3] but the earliest known record with his middle initial (the 1900 U.S. census) has 'G', not 'J'.[6]
In 1900, he was living in Christiana Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware, with his parents and siblings. He was apparently not attending school.[6]
In 1910, he was living in New Castle County, Delaware, with his mother, stepfather, and siblings. He was working as a laborer at a woolen mill.
[8]
In 1917, he was living in Marshallton, New Castle County, Delaware.
He was a laborer for Diamond State Fibre Company.
He was medium tall, medium build, not disabled, and had grey eyes, and dark brown hair.
[3]
He served in US Army during World War One.
He was apparently called up in the first draft, in July 1917.[9]
On 26 July 1917, he was enlisted.
On 17 June 1919, he was discharged.[10]
(He is not the Walter G Boyd with service number 4 633 191, whose mother was Jannet G Boyd, of Elm Grove, West Virginia.[11])
In 1920, he was living on Lincoln Highway, New Castle County, Delaware, with his mother, stepfather, and siblings. He was a tube maker, at a fibre mill.
[12]
In 1930, he was living in Marshallton, New Castle County, Delaware, with his mother, stepfather, and siblings. He was a tube maker, at a fibre plant.
[13]
On 12 October 1938, he married Nellie Christina Morrissey, at Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.
He was a barber.
They both were living in New Castle County.
[5]
In 1940, he was living at 619 Jackson Street, ward 5, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware.
He was living with his wife.
He was a barber, had worked 48 hours the week of 24 March, and had earned $603 in 52 weeks of work in 1939.
[7]
In 1942, he was living at 619 N Jackson Street, Wilmington, Delaware, with his wife.
He was self-employed as a barber in Marshallton.
He was 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighed 200 pounds, and had blue eyes, brown hair, and a light complexion.
[1]
He retired in 1957, having worked as a security guard with the Du Pont Company Experimental Station for fourteen years.[14]
He was 'a championship checker player and appeared in many tournaments'.
He was a charter member of the Cranston Heights Fire Company.[14]
He died at 9.15 pm, on 21 November 1978, in St Francis Hospital, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, of septicemia, due to acute congestive heart failure.
He was buried on 25 November 1978, in Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, section M, block 3, lot 10, grave 9.
The funeral home was Doherty-Wickersham Funeral Homes, in Wilmington Delaware.
