Biography

Thomas (Boyd) Boyd First Earl of Arran is a member of Clan Boyd.

Thomas Boyd, 1st Earl of Arran, in Kilmarnock, Scotland to Robert Boyd, 1st Lord Boyd of Kilmarnock and Mariot (Janet) Maxwell.[1]

Robert arranged to have Thomas created Earl of Arran and Baron Kilmarnock in the Peerage of Scotland and also arranged for Thomas's marriage to Princess Mary (sister to James III and daughter of James II, King of Scotland, and Marie von Geldern). Thomas was created 1st Earl of Arran in Scotland on 26 April 1467 and was married to his second wife, Mary Stewart, Princess of Scotland. Thomas's first marriage had been to Lady Elizabeth Montgomerie, daughter of Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Lord Montgomerie.

Thomas was styled as Master of Boyd. In 1469 he went to Denmark to escort Margaret of Denmark to Scotland for her marriage to King James III of Scotland. While Robert and Thomas were out of the country, their regency was overthrown, and they were attainted for high treason, forfeiting their titles and estates. However, Thomas fulfilled his mission (that of bringing the king's bride, Margaret, to Scotland), and then, warned by his wife, escaped to the continent of Europe.

The Earl of Arran and Lady Mary's children, who are both said to have been born abroad, were:

  • James, 2nd Lord Boyd
  • Grisel or Margaret (called Grizel in the pedigrees, but appears as Margaret elsewhere), born between 1468 and 1473

His marriage to Mary Stewart was unpopular, seen as an insult by the King. At some point, she returned to Scotland, apparently to seek a pardon from the King her brother, but instead was confined at Kilmarnock. Her husband was summoned to appear within sixty days, which he failed to do, and their marriage was declared null and void. "According to Ferrerius, Buchanan, and other old historians, this took place in 1469, but the correct date was probably February or March 1474."

Thomas probably died at Antwerp about 1473.
