Biography

John was born in 1788 in New York. [1] [2]

John Bracken married Margaret Palmer Warren on 9 Jul 1814 in Sangerfield, New York.

After the birth of their first child, William, they moved to Canada. Circumstances as a result of the Anglo/American war of 1814 had forced the Bracken family to move north to British held Upper Canada, north of the Saint Lawrence River, where they settled in Seeley's Bay, Leeds, Ontario. [3]

John Bracken purchased several blocks of land in the Ellisville and Seeley's Bay areas and cleared the land for farming. In the List of Original Patentees of Lands in Caledon East there are two listings for a John Bracken - one John Bracken is listed in 2nd Concession East - another John Bracken is listed in 5th Concession East [4]

John Bracken died on 25 February 1831 in Delta; leaving four children and his wife Margaret pregnant with another, his posthumous child John Bracken. [5]

John Bracken is buried in Delta United Cemetery; a modern plaque marks his grave with the inscription - John Bracken born Sangerfield N.Y. died Feb. 25. 1831, Delta, Ontario. no birth date is given. [6] [7]

  1. The birth date of 1788 in New York is from a family history by George W. Bracken of Kingston, which begins with a mention of Joseph Bracken recorded in the New York Census of 1790 and that John Bracken is probably the son of this Joseph Bracken - however checking with the original document reveals that this is actually Joseph Brackham and Samuel Brackham of Schenectady, Albany, New York; the name is very clearly written.

Bracken-1175 and Bracken-249 do not represent the same person because: realized that the merge should be with the son born 1804 and that the genealogy following Bracken-249 is missing a generation

Bracken-1175 and Bracken-249 do not represent the same person because: Son John of John Bracken (1788 - 1831), was born in Leeds County, Upper Canada in 1831 and died in 1905. If John was born 2 years prior to John ( 1782 - ) arriving in America, he would be over 100 years old when he died! Not very likely! See sources for John Bracken (1831-1905) and Margaret (Warren) Bracken ( 1797-1860)

Their is no evidence that Robert was a son of John Bracken.

The 1851 census of Leeds County ( Canada West) list the children of John and Margaret Bracken as William, James, John, Jane and Elizabeth Ann. Other children two Janes and Benjamin had died.

Bracken-1175 and Bracken-249 appear to represent the same person because: Bill Coffee's correspondence with John Bracken, Premier of Manitoba https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bracken-155 confirms the connection here - Bracken-249 shown a birth date of 1788, but note that this is the birth date for his brother James Bracken, John Bracken-1175 was born in Ireland in 1782, widowed, and arrived with children according to the shipping records.

letter to Rev. Hubert William Coffey from John Bracken 1883-1969; dated March 20 1942

In answer to your question, I may say that my great grandfather on my father's side came from Northern Ireland; I understand that they came first to the United States where my father's father was born. In the third decade of the last century two of the sons moved from New York State to Ontario, where one remained and the other went to Chicago.
