Name

Abigail3 (Bradford) Armitrader (William2Nathaniel1), daughter of William2 and Bridget (Fisher) Bradford, was born in Accomack County, Virginia, probably before 1712.1 She was named in the line of inheritance for the tract her father gave to her sister Bridget3 (Bradford) Addison in 1722: “for want of such heirs then to my Daughter Abagale Bradford.”2 She must have married before 24 June 1728, when her father William2 executed a deed of gift to his son John and mentioned Abigail by her married name in the line of inheritance after her brother John and sister Anne: “in Case [Ann Bradford] Dye without Such heir then the before Given Land to fall to my Daughter Abigail Armitrader.”3 Abigail’s husband was Henry Armitrader, as evidenced by her father’s will (4 July 1735 - 1 June 1736), in which William2 instructed Fisher3 Bradford to “pay in the Lieu of a Negroe called Appy X pounds Current Money to the daughter of Henry Armitrader called Comfort Armitrader at the time of her Arriving to the age of Sixteen years old or deliver her the Negro.”4 "Henry Armitrader died before 30 January 1750, when administration on his estate was granted to Abigail Armitrader, with her brother John3 Bradford and Samuel Beech as securities.5 Abigail herself died before 28 January 1752, when administration on her estate was granted to her son Littleton Armitrader with Joshua Burton and Bartholomew Taylor as securities.6 Her estate was appraised by Fisher3 Bradford and Caleb Burton and children were listed in the estate distribution: Leah, Rachel, Henry, William, Comfort, John.7 "Abigail’s husband Henry Armitrader was the grandson of Arthur and Rose (Kellam) Armitrader/Armitrading. Arthur was the son of Henry Armitradeing, who was the founder of the family on the Eastern Shore.8 The immigrant Henry Armitradeing was a headright of William Stone in a certificate granted 4 June 1635 and first appears in the records of the Eastern Shore on 13 August 1638, when he gave a deposition in Northampton County court.10 Arthur Armitrading was Henry Armitradeing’s only known offspring. [NOTE: See chart "Descendants of Henry Armitradeing" in reference] "According to Adventures of Purse and Person, Arthur Armitrading was the son of Henry by his wife Christian Granger. However, there is a difficulty with this conclusion. In a deed of gift dated in October 1647, Nicholas Granger refers to his daughter by her maiden name and seems to indicate that she was childless at the time of the gift: “ . . . if ye sd Xpian Granger dept this life without a Child or Children Lawfully begotten on her body in marriage. . . ”11 On the other hand, in the very same month Henry “Armitage” gave his own son Arthur Armitradinge a gift,12 which means that Arthur had been born by then. This opens up the likely possibility that Arthur was born to Henry before Henry’s marriage to Christian Granger. Henry was certainly married to Christian Granger before 22 August 1650, when his wife’s oral will was presented in court.13 Henry himself died in 1663, at which time his wife was Alice ____.14 "In case Arthur Armitradeing was the son of Christian Granger, it’s worth quoting in full the description of her father given in Adventures of Purse and Person: 'Nicholas Granger was among the 75 boys and 25 “wenches” listed in the Bridewell Royal Hospital records, 27 Feb. 1618/19, to go to Virginia. These were children 8 to 16 found “running wild in the streets” of London, “sleeping under stalls,” and begging, who had been committed to Bridewell, which served as a house of correction. They were mainly homeless waifs, although some probably were petty pilferers. One of the ships that brought them to Virginia was the George, 150 tons, William Ewens, master, which left England in March 1618/19 and arrived in Virginia in May 1619. By Feb. 1624/25 there were alive in Virginia very few young men who can be identified as “Bridewell Boys’ and of these there are but two, Nicholas Granger and Nathaniel Tatum, from whom descent can be proved. . . Nicholas Granger is on the List of the Living, 16 Feb. 1623/24, when he was on the Eastern Shore. The muster of Jan.-Feb. 1624/5 gives, on the Eastern Shore, among the servants of Capt. William Epes, Nicholas Granger, age 15, in the George, 1618.'15 "Abigail3 (Bradford) Armitrader was born probably before 1712 in Accomack County, Virginia. She married Henry Armitrader between 28 April 1722 and 24 June 1728. Henry died before 30 January 1750 and Abigail before 28 January 1752. They had issue:16 i. LITTLETON4 ARMITRADER.
