Biography

He was a Lieutenant, settled in Plympton.

Lt. Samuel inherited property from his father's estate. He also inherited Gov. William Bradford's precious manuscript, "Of Plimouth Plantation, [1]" one of the most important documents of early American history. The work was loaned to Rev. Thomas Prince who was using it as a reference for his own book that he was writing. He kept it in his library in Boston's Old South Church. The British, who occupied the Old South Church during the Revolution, then got hold of it. Later it turned up in the Bishop of London's palace and was only returned to the state of Massachusetts, after some negotiation, in 1897.

Samuel Bradford was a leading citizen of Plympton. He was Selectman several times, a Representative to the General Court, and Lieutenant of Plympton Battery. He died in Plympton on Mar. 26, 1740, at the age of 56, and was laid to rest in Ye Olde Burial Grounds there.[2]

Samuel, child of John Bradford & Mercy Warren, died (age 56) on 26 March 1740 in Plympton.[3]

Probate

His will is dated 26 January 1729/30 and proved on 20 May 1740 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife Sarah, and children, John, Gideon, William, Mary, Sarah [4]

His inventory was recorded on 4 August 1740 in Plymouth.[5]

His real estate was appraised on 6 March 1744/45. His widow received her dower and she signed an acknowledgment that her daughters, Phebe, and Abigail received their share from their brothers, as Sarah was their guardian. Sarah also presented an account of his estate. Samuel left a considerable estate and left no provisions for his children, Abigail, Phebe, and Samuel (who were born after his death) since they were born after he made his will. [6]
