Lieutenant Joel Bradley was born December 8, 1738 at Quinnipiac village, New Haven County, Connecticut, British Colonial America and died on September 18, 1801 in New Haven County,Connecticut.[1]

Joel Bradley married Abigail Tuttle on 10 January 1760 in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut.[1][2][3] Children from this union included:

  • Elam Bradley (unknown–1773)
  • Mary Bradley Munson (1760–1797)
  • Amasa Bradley (1762–1827)
  • Chloe Bradley Dickerman (1764–1853)
  • Blain Bradley (1771–1773)
  • Seymour Bradley (1780–1821)

In colonial times, most male residents in New England were expected to serve in the militia. Connecticut's local militiamen organized as trainbands (later companies). Each company/trainband normally had a Lieutenant, an Ensign and 2 sergeants. If the company exceeded 64 men, it would have a Captain and additional Sergeants as well. In 1776 Connecticut had 25 Regiments commanded by Majors (later Colonels); the 2nd Regiment was comprised to companies/trainbands from Branford, Derby, Milford & New Haven. The Regiments were grouped into Brigades, commanded by a Major General. The 2nd Regiment was commanded by Colonel Joseph Thomson from October 1776 through May 1778.[4]

Joel Bradley served in the Revolutionary War as a Lieutenant for the New Haven trainband/company in Colonel Thomson/Thompson's 2nd Regiment.[5] We have further confirmation of Joel Bradley's service in the Connecticut Record of service of Connecticut men in the War of the Revolution, which states[6]:

"In North Haven a number of volunteers of more than 60 men having enlisted themselves into the service of their country, chose the following for their officers, January 13, '77, viz. Hezekiah Sabin, Captain; John Gilbert, Lieutenant; Joel Bradley (of Mount Carmel), 2nd Lieutenant; Jared Hill, Ensign."

In the 1790 US Census for Hamden, New Haven, Connecticut we find [7][8]: Joel Bradley is head of household with 2 white males over 16 years of age and 2 females of all ages. These 2 pages images have 7 Bradley families and several Tuttle families.[9]
