John's father, Chester Bradley was a paper manufacturer in Dansville, NY, the family business. His mother was Maria Elizabeth Morrison. John moved to Canton, Ohio shortly after the death of his father arriving by 1860. Soon thereafter he married Eusebia Christina Shorb. They would have their first child in 1861, Mark.
Meanwhile the country was in turmoil, preparing for the Civil War. John and his family would do their parts. John became a seaman in the Union Army. As John went off to war, Eusebia would raise their child.
John served on the USS Indianola. "She left her anchorage in the Yazoo River at 10:15 p.m., 13 February, and moved slowly downstream until the first gun was fired at her from the Vicksburg cliffs slightly more than an hour later. She then raced ahead at full speed until out of range of the Confederate cannon, which thundered at her from above. She anchored for the night 4 miles below Warrenton, Mississippi, and early the next morning got underway down river," according to Wikipedia.org.
A short eleven days later, the 24th of February, 1863, the Indianola was sunk and it's crew were all captured, no deaths. Another short ten days later, the prisoners were exchanged and John would be required to sit out the rest of the war.
John and Eusebia completed their family with a daughter in 1869, Mary. From family information including photographs, the family would get together often for vacations. He would spend the remainder of his life caring for his family and community.

OBITUARY
Brother John M. Bradley, of Nimisilla Lodge No 39, also of Canton Encampment No 112, died at his home in Canton, Ohio, January 21, 1892, of heart failure, and was buried with the honors of the Order on January 27th, both Subordinate and Encampment attending in large numbers. Brother Bradley was initiated into Nimisilla Lodge September, 1874, and admitted to Canton Encampment February 9, 1876. He was one of the most active Odd Fellows in this city. He early became proficient in the work of the Order, and being always in attendance he became one of the pillars of Odd Fellowship.
The workman dies, but the work goes on. While we shall miss him, we shall ever cherish a lively recollection of his virtues and bury all his imperfections beneath the clods that rest upon his bosom. Brother Bradley has served the Order in every capacity, having passed all the chairs, and for the past fourteen years has been the efficient Scribe of Canton Encampment, also serving as Deputy Grand Patriarch for several years. To the bereaved family we would extend our sincere sympathy in this saddest of all afflictions. [1]
NOTE: Some believe that both of these children were adopted. The facts are that it was the 1860's with a lack of transportation in the area, there was much turmoil in the country with the impending Civil War and the children were both born out of state and a distance from Canton.
