Illogical Leap

Saul M. Montes-Bradley compiler of bradleyfoundation.org would have us believe that William Bradley of the 1619 Warwickshire visitation and William Broadley of Bingley, Yorkshire, are the same man.

According to Montes-Bradley, William Broadley of Bingley was born in 1545 in Bingley, Yorkshire, England; will dated 22 Dec 1598; died July 19, 1600 in Bingley, Yorkshire, England; will proved 14 Aug 1600 #2304 at the Ancestors of Saul M. Montes-Bradley website.

This is unsourced, but assuming it's true... Bingley in Yorkshire and Coventry in Warwickshire are about 100 miles apart "as the crow flies."

It is illogical that William of Bingley and William of Warwickshire are the same person.

William of Warwickshire married Agnes Margates and had three children listed in the 1619 Visitation.

Francis Bradley
Thomas Bradley
William Bradley

William of Bingley had the following children recorded in the parish register,

Danyell, the sonne of Will’m Broadley 26 Jan 1588/9 (p. 12)
Samuell, the sonne of Will’m Broadley* 28 March 1591 (90/1) or April 15 1591 (probably his death date. (p. 14) He was buried April 16 1591 (p. 105)
Thomas, the sonne of Will’m Broadley 9 Dec 1593 (p. 17)

List of William's children given by Montes-Bradley with notes by Anne B

  • Francis: this would be child of Warwickshire William
  • Michael: - no Michael's in the "contemporary to Daniel" records, Daniel had a son Michael
  • Thomas: - Son of Warwickshire William? Montes-Bradley lists him as died young.
  • Arthur: of Bingley had daughters 1603 and 1604 who died young,. His wife died in 1604. So he might be a son of William and brother of Danyell.
  • William: Montes-Bradley has this as the son of Warwickshire who m. Joanna Waddington
  • Sarah:
  • Daniell: (Danyell) - This would be Danyell father of the immigrant William
  • Samuel: Child of Bingley b. and died 1591.
  • Thomas: b. 1593 in Bingley, is probably the Thomas who had a son Thomas in 1620, although this is not the life that the Montes-Bradley website has given him.
  • Matthew - like Michael above there are none in the records contemporary to Danyell, but Danyell had a son Matthew.
  • Sarah

Questions:

  • William Bradley. Saul M. Montes-Bradley states: "Maj. William Broadley was born on 27 Jan 1609/1610 in Shipley (Bradford), Yorkshire, England. He was christened on 8 Jul 1621 in St. Michel, Shipley, Yorkshire, England."
    • a. We know that birth records were not generally kept so the 27 Jan 1609/10 birth is probably a baptism. Indeed all the "Borns" he uses are actually baptism's.
    • b. The baptism in 1621 is for a William Bradley son of John. See FreeReg2
    • c. Why was this one child, in the middle of other children, baptized in a different church? The record doesn't seem to be online, so has not been examined.
  • Elizabeth Sheaffe would seem to be drawn out of a hat. There are no Sheaffes (or spelling variations) listed in the Index to the Bingley records p. 343. We do know that Elizabeth was the given name of the mother of the target children.
  • Daniels? There are two, both with lives into adulthood. This is highly unusual, but not unheard of. The second Daniel was born to the second wife, after the first had reached adulthood and perhaps even after he emigrated.

The siblings of Daniel are clearly known from the will of his father William Bradley/Broadley of New Close Bradford 22 dec 1598. This information is reinforced by the will of Daniel's brother Michael 29 april 1613. Perhaps this page could be rewritten?

The will of William Broadley of new close Bradford 22 dec 1598 lists his wife as Agnes and his children as Michael, Daniel, Matthew and Sara. Since we have no marriage for William and Agnes she may not be the mother of all the children.

William Bradley and Agnes Margates would not be the parents of Danyell Broadley. They were in entirely different parts of the country. Please see the profile of William for analysis and explanation. I am going to disconnect. Objections?

Bradley-3534 and Bradley-490 do not represent the same person because: Spouse and death date do not agree; believe these are two different people/If further research clarifies issue, merge can be done in the future
