John Newman Bragg was born in 1817 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He was the son of Joseph Docia Bragg (1775–1837) and Triphena Poe Bragg (1776–1868).
He married Lucy Ann Rollins on April 1, 1839 in Amissville, Rappahannock County, Virginia. John and Lucy had at least two children Thomas Joseph Bragg Bragg-714 and Sallie Bragg.
He died on 30 Aug 1889 (aged 71–72) in Ross County, Ohio.
