Mary J. Brandon was born in March 1845 in White County, Tennessee. She passed away in December 1866 in Arkansas.

James and Mary Jane had one known child, Wylie Roberts, born July 1862. It appears as if James died about 1862 or shortly thereafter. There is an unconfirmed death date of 31 December 1866 for Mary Jane. Even if unconfirmed, both James and Mary Jane appear to have died before 1870. Their only son, Wylie, is living with James' widowed mother, Annie, on the 1870 census and in 1880 he is with his uncle, Nathaniel G. Roberts.

Since Wylie does not appear on any census record with James or Mary Jane, the only record that connects him as their son is his death certificate. It states he was born in Arkansas in July 1862 and his father was Jim Roberts, his mother Unknown Brandon.
