Biography

Not aware of documentation proving Jane Branson as the daughter of William H. Branson. Evidence noted below strongly suggest she is the daughter of William H. Branson. DNA evidence also suggest Jane is the daughter of William H. Branson.

Jane Branson was likely born October 12, 1823 per Find a Grave.

The 1830 US census for Mackinaw Precinct, Tazewell County, Illinois lists a female 5-10 years old as a child of William Branson (age 30-40). This is likely Jane Branson and puts her birth between 1820 and 1825. Mackinaw, Illinois is about 5 miles from the McLean County, Illinois border where Jane Branson married James M. Shipley in 1838.

The 1840 US census for DeWitt County, Illinois lists a female, likely Jane Branson, spouse of James M. Shipley (they were married in 1838), as age 15-20 years old. That puts her birthday 1820 to 1825.

The 1850 US census for DeWitt county, Illinois lists (Ia) "Iowa" as birthplace for "Jane Shipley". The 1850 census also estimates the birthdate of Jane Shipley as 1813 (maybe 1819, confusing to read).

According to, "Biographical Portrait Album of DeWitt and Piat Counties, ILL", published by Chapman Bros, Chicago, 1891, James M. Shipley and Jane Branson had 8 children (chronological order may be incorrect):
1. Sarah H. (living in MO in 1891)
2. Elza H. (living in DeWitt Co., IL in 1891)
3. Mary L. (living in Mo in 1891)
4. William (Find A Grave #58197647)
5. Francis M (died in maturity, leaving a wife & 3 children)
6. Isaac (eldest, killed at New Hope Church, GA during the Civil War as a member of a Confederate regiment)
7. Unknown Daughter (5 years of age or less at death)
8. George T (details unknown)

Burial: Shipley Cemetery Harrison County Missouri, USA

She is the only person interred at this cemetery.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jane by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jane:

Given that nobody has commented on my proposed parents for Jane Branson I think I'm going to go ahead and revise this profile to show William H. Branson and Sarah Sally Mesinger Graves as her parents.

If you disagree, let me know ASAP.

I'll look at this tomorrow hopefully. You may be right, for some reason I already had created a profile of William Branson.

I’m thinking the parents of Jane Branson may be William H. Branson (1791-1860)(on WikiTree as Branson-1369) and Sarah Sally Mesinger Graves (1794-1840).

Per “Genealogy Trails, Sangamon County, Illinois”: WILLIAM, born Jan. 9, 1791, in North Carolina, and was taken by his parents to South Carolina, in 1793. In 1811 the family moved to Chilicothe, Ohio, where he was married to Sally M. Graves, in 1815. He moved to Indiana, and from there to Sangamon county, Ill., about the time his father came; moved to Galena, and from there to DeWitt county, Ill.

It is possible the parents of Jane Branson were living in or near Galena, Illinois at the time of her birth. Galena is located on the East bank of the Mississippi River, Just across the Mississippi River at Galena is the state of Iowa. This would explain Iowa as her place of birth in the 1850 census.

Find A Grave lists October 12, 1823 as the birth date for Jane Branson. This agrees with the 1830 and 1840 census. The 1850 census lists her age as 37 rather than 27 (possibly a mistake?).

Jane Branson married James M. Shipley December 13, 1838 in McLean County Illinois. McLean County is adjacent to DeWitt County. McLean County was formed from Tazewell County as was parts of DeWitt County.

William H. Branson and the family of James M. Shipley resided concurrently in DeWitt County, Illinois for a number of years. In 1848 William H. Branson moved to Sheridan, Oregon. William Amos Shipley (son of Jane Branson and James M. Shipley) purchased land in Sheridan, Oregon before 1908. The land William Amos Shipley purchased near Sheridan is very near the William H. Branson donation land claim. This supports a relationship between the William H. Branson and the Shipley family.

A female, 5-10 years of age is listed in the 1830 census for Mackinaw, Tazewell County, Illinois in the household of William Branson. I think this female is Jane Branson, daughter of William Branson.

A female 15-20 years of age is listed in the 1840 census for DeWitt County, Illinois in the household of James Shipley. I think this female is Jane Branson, wife of James Shipley.

Jane, age 37, female, born in Ia (Iowa) listed in the 1850 census for DeWitt County, Illinois in the household of James Shipley. This is Jane Branson, wife of James Shipley.

Any thoughts on this?
