Disputed identity and origins; other conflicts:
(1) Large numbers of family files, many online, and FamilySearch "User Submitted Genealogies" report about a couple, John Bate and Ann Bray, further reporting Ann to be the daughter of Edward Bray.
As "Ann Bray" she was associated on WikiTree with spouse John Bate and parents Edward Bray / Beatrice Shirley. The link from "Ann Bray" to parents has been severed.
Historical justification for the associations has been elusive. the historical records identified are contradictory. No child named Ann reported born to Sir Edward Bray and his wife Beatrice Shirley in early peerage work;. Review of the same work finds no reference to surname Bray nor to places Lydd and/or Wherwell. See John Burke, A genealogical and heraldic history of the commoners of Great Britain and Ireland, enjoying territorial possessions or high official rank; but univested with heritable honours, 4 vols. (1835-1838), 3:245 for "Sir Edward Bray, knt. of Vachery Park..."; digital images, Hathi Trust (accessed 2014).
(2) Proof of life and/or identity and kinship questions about John Bate and Ann Bray remain.
WikiTree-ers have been unable to identify historical records[1] that confirm the existence of a couple John and Ann (Bray) Bate(s), parents of the associated children, john Bate and/or Ann Bate.
Narrative reports three names associated with this profile as "Ann Bray," "Sarah Hilhill" and "Ann ____." (Both "Ann Bray" and "Sarah Hilhill" seem to site the same Ancestry member tree as a source. The name Ann ___ seems to cite a different Ancestry member tree.)
The spouse, John Bate, is reported a son of John Bate and Dorcas Bate. It seems too coincidental to find these ancestral names reported when the names John Bate and Dorcas _____ elsewhere and otherwise identify the "Rev. John Bate" and his wife/widow, thought to be the brother and sister-in-law of Rev. Stephen Bachiler's first wife.
As with all genealogical work, finding such as those mentioned above are subject to review and update based on improved historical discovery and insight.
