Richard Braswell's birth year is a general estimate, based on the birth year of his son in 1790. His birth place is based on where his father lived in 1740, when he was original settlers of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, in an area that was at the time close to Orange County.

"By 1740, four years later, the greatest increase of immigrants reached Edgecombe. Marmaduke Norfleet, William Kinchen, Sam Sessums, Edward Jones, Joseph Howe, Richard Braswell, Elias Fort, William Watson, Josiah Jones, George Suggs, Robert Hines, Andrew Irwin, and Richard Sessums, men who afterward achieved great honor by defending the political and civic rights of their county, came into the precinct, bought and also received by grant much land. During the meeting of the Assembly for this year over fifty thousand acres of land were distributed among the settlers." [6]

His father's location in Edgecombe County was near enough to Orange County that he was listed in the 1755 Orange County census. No doubt borders were somewhat mobile in those early days of settlement of the area.

Research Notes

There are multiple generations of Richard Braswell / Brazil individuals, and sometimes that information can be confusing. This Richard Braswell and his son, known as Richard Brazil, were either 1 and 2 or 3 and 4, depending on what information you are looking at. Clearly he wasn't the first of the Richard Braswells, but some documents refer to him as Richard Braswell Sr., with the implication that Richard Brazil was a Jr. It has been well documented that Richard Brazil Jr. left South Carolina and headed to Arkansas where he purchased land and raised his family. Some documents suggest that both men went to Arkansas.

In the Bureau of Land Management Records [10]

There is only one Richard Braswell who purchased land in Arkansas. This land was in Nevada County, Saline, and was purchased after his death. The date of the transaction is in bold text below.

  • BRASWELL, RICHARD W 12/1/1857 8858 AR 5th PM 014S - 021W NE¼ 35 Nevada

There are no other Braswells in the BLM records who purchased land in Arkansas.

There are, however, multiple Richard Brazil purchases, but these appear to be references to his son as they were purchased in the mid 1800s, most after the elder Richard Braswell was deceased in either 1839 or 1842, depending on which record is correct. [11] The Richard Brazil purchases are listed below, with the dates of the transactions in bold text.
