Biography

Elizabeth was born abt 1760 in Albemarle, Virginia. She was the daughter of George Breckenridge and Ann Doaks. Elizabeth married Jesse Evans, and died in Virginia in 1815. Burial: Wythe, Virginia

BRECKENRIDGE FAMILY Alexander Breckenridge the emigrant was of Scottish Covenanter Stock, and by tradition a descendant of the House of Douglass. The tradition also is that he or his forefathers fled from religious persecution during the reign of Charles II to the North of Ireland. On May 22, 1740, he made oath at Orange Court House Virginia "that he had imported himself, Jane (his wife), John, George, Robert, James, Smith, Jane and Letitia" (his children) from Ireland to Philadelphia, and thence to this Colony at his own charges etc. The earliest evidence of his presence in Virginia however, is contained in the record of a survey made for him in Augusta County, May 12, 1738. According to family tradition, his wife was a sister of John Preston, and the two Pioneers are said to have emigrated to Virginia at the solicitation of Preston's wife's brother Col. James Patton. Alexander Breckenridge was chosen one of the Commissioners of Tinkling Spring Congregation in Augusta County in 1741, the Pastor of which was Rev. John Craig. He died in 1744.

Two of his children are known to have left descendants: George and Robert. George who was his father's Executor, married Ann Doak and by her had:

Alexander, born 1743 married 1st Magdalen Gamble, 2d Mary Chadd, and died in Bourbon Co, KY in 1813.

Robert, married his cousin Mary Doak, and died in Bath Co, KY in 1824. Jane, married ___ Alcorn. Elizabeth, married Jesse Evans, and died in Virginia in 1815. Sarah married ___ Findley. Letitia, married ___ Lindsey.

George Breckenridge, married 2nd in 1786 Agnes Watson. He died in Wythe Co, VA in 1790. All three of his sons served as Volunteers in the Revolutionary Campaigns in Southwest Virginia, Alexander participating in addition in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Their descendants retain the original spelling of the name "Breckenridge" and this spelling was also observed by Col. Robert Breckenridge (younger brother of George and son of Alexander the emigrant), but his descendants use the form "Breckinridge."

Robert Breckenridge was an officer in the Indian wars... He married 1st Sarah Poage, by whom he had two sons: Alexander who married Mrs. Jane Buchanan Floyd and died in Kentucky in 1801. Robert, who died unmarried in 1833.

Both brothers were officers in the Revolutionary War, and men of prominence in the early affairs of Kentucky. Their father Col. Robert Breckenridge, married 2d in 1758, Letitia Prestion, daughter of John Preston and Elizabeth Patton, by whom he had...
